South Dakota State looked to extend its 25-game home winning streak and take over sole possession atop The Summit League standings on Saturday in the 44th Annual Pork Classic against IUPUI, and accomplished both in an 80-56 win over the Jaguars.
SDSU's 26th straight home win, and ninth consecutive in the Pork Classic, gives the Jacks a 19-5 overall record and an 8-2 mark in The Summit League, putting them atop the league standings, while IUPUI falls to 11-15 overall and to 7-4 in league play.
"It felt like a very strange game. It was weird because we made all of the hustle plays, but offensively, all we did was stand around," head coach Scott Nagy said. "The second half we played better because I feel like our offense was in front of us. We were good defensively the whole game, but we were much better offensively in the second half because we played with much better pace."
The Jacks got four baskets from four different Jackrabbits to open the game, and used an early 9-0 run to take an 11-2 lead less than five minutes into the contest.
The Jackrabbits pushed the lead to as many as 13 points on an old fashioned 3-point play by Mike Daum before taking an 11-point, 36-25 lead into halftime.
Up by 15 less than two minutes into the second half, the Jaguars used a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 46-40 with 15 minutes, 17 seconds remaining, but the Jacks fired back with a 7-0 run of their own over the next two minutes, drawing a timeout from the IUPUI bench with SDSU leading 53-40.
The timeout slowed the Jacks down a bit, but the Jaguars didn't capitalize, and SDSU pushed the lead up to and past 20 points, with a high margin of 25 at 79-54 with under three minutes left.
Deondre Parks led a balanced offensive attack with 17 points, 14 of which came in the second half. Both George Marshall and Daum added 16 points, as 10 different Jackrabbits cracked the scorebook.
Jordan Pickett led a pair of Jaguars in double figures with 13 points off the bench. Matt O'Leary added 12 in the loss.
Winners of five in a row, the Jacks look to make it six straight on Wednesday, when they take on Omaha at 7 p.m. inside Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb.
