SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State scored multiple runs in each of the odd-numbered innings and defeated South Dakota State, 10-7, in college baseball action Friday at John Smith Field.
The second game of Friday's scheduled doubleheader was rained out. Further schedule updates will be posted when available.
Sacramento State, coached by former Jackrabbit mentor Reggie Christiansen, got out to a quick 2-0 lead as Blake Edmonson led off with a double and scored on base hit two batters later by Kody Reynolds. Reynolds later stole second and scored on a double down the left-field line by Vinny Esposito.
The Jackrabbits answered a run in the top of the second as Newt Johnson led off the frame with a double and scored on a base hit by Matt Johnson.
The Hornets, 5-3 overall, put together a two-run, two-out rally in the third inning to pull ahead 4-1, but SDSU's Phil Velez came through with a two-out double in the top of the fifth to trim the margin to 4-2.
Two Jackrabbit errors to open the bottom of the fifth led to two more Sacramento State runs as Bronson Grubbs delivered a two-run triple off Jackrabbit starter Andrew Clemen.
SDSU, 0-9 overall, scored single runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings to get back to within two runs at 6-4. Mitch Foster plated Newt Johnson with the sixth-inning run on a sacrifice fly, while Luke Ringhofer knocked in the run in the seventh with a groundout that scored Tony Kjolsing.
Sacramento State put the game out of reach with a four-run home half of the seventh. Edmonson, who was 2-for-4 and scored three runs, opened the frame with an infield single against a tiring Clemen, and scored on a base hit by Reynolds. Esposito added his third run-scoring hit of the game later in the inning and Brandon Hunley capped the Hornet scoring with a two-run single.
The Jackrabbits put together a rally in the ninth, highlighted by RBI doubles from both Newt and Matt Johnson. Both Johnsons were among the five SDSU players with two hits in the game as the Jackrabbits out-hit the Hornets, 13-11.
Sam Long struck out seven and did not walk a batter over five innings to earn the victory for Sacramento State. Tyler Beardsley recorded the final two outs for the save.
Clemen took the loss for the Jackrabbits despite striking out six and walking only one over six innings.
