STOCKTON, Calif. – The South Dakota State University baseball team dropped two closely contested games Tuesday, falling to Sacramento State, 4-0, early in the day and then coming up on the short end of a 5-2 decision at Pacific University.
Game 1
In the opener, four Sacramento State pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Hornets closed out a rain-altered college baseball series with a 4-0 blanking of South Dakota State at Klein Family Field.
The Hornets, who swept the three-game series, improved to 7-3 overall behind three hits and two runs batted in from starting shortstop Trent Goodrich. Goodrich opened the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning and later scored on a base hit by Vinny Esposito to give Sac State a 2-0 lead.
Gunner Pollman extended the Hornet lead to 3-0 with an RBI double against Jackrabbit starter Henry DeCaster in the fourth inning.
Sac State starter Max Karnos allowed only two hits over five innings, striking out four and walking two. Austin Root followed with two scoreless innings.
Goodrich capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth, following Blake Edmonson's leadoff triple.
DeCaster, a freshman from Shoreview, Minnesota, who was making his first collegiate start, gave up five hits and three runs in four innings. He struck out two batters and walked three.
Landon Busch fanned seven batters in four innings of relief in his strongest outing of the season.
SDSU's three hits came from Tony Kjolsing, Josh Kunzmann and Cody Sharrow. Sharrow's hit was a double.

Newcomer Skyler Wenninger, who led the the Jackrabbits' seven-hit effort by going 3-for-3, plated Johnson with the go-ahead run with a single to center field.
The Tigers regained the lead for good in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Kevin Sandri that chased Jackrabbit starter Eldon Evans. Sandri capped the scoring in the eighth with a base hit that scored McKay Koissian, who delivered an RBI double earlier in the frame.
