MINNEAPOLIS – Five Minnesota pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters and limit South Dakota State to four hits as the Golden Gophers won their fifth straight game with a 7-3 victory in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Siebert Field.
Minnesota improved to 19-10 overall, while SDSU fell to 10-21.
Golden Gopher starter Nick Lackney retired all 10 batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Ty McDevitt added 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, with Jordan Jess adding three strikeouts as part of 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota offense broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning off Jackrabbit starter
Austin Kost. Jordan Smith scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Alex Boxwell. Riley Smith later doubled and came home on a single by Dan Motl.
The Golden Gophers took advantage of two wild pitches to score a run in the fourth, then built the lead to 6-0 with a two-run fifth against reliever
Bryce Hanson. Two more wild pitches produced the first run of the frame, with the second run scoring on a base hit by Jordan Smith.
The Jackrabbits scored all three of their runs with a two-out rally in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the deficit in half to 6-3. After the first two SDSU batters were retired,
Skyler Wenninger was hit by a pitch and
Luke Ringhofer drew a walk.
Paul Jacobson, who was the lone Jackrabbit with two hits, then followed with a single to center field that plated Wenninger. In a long at-bat in which he fouled off a number of two-strike pitches,
Matt Johnson delivered a two-run double to right field that scored both Ringhofer and Jacobson.
Minnesota countered with a run in the home half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Fiedler to account for the final margin. The Golden Gophers finished with a 10-4 advantage in hits, including two-hit performances by Fiedler, Boxwell and Jordan Smith.
Ringhofer walked twice in the game as he extended his streak of reaching base safely to 23 games.
Kost allowed two runs over three innings and recorded three strikeouts – all of which came in his final inning of work.
Chris Halbur completed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and
Derek Feige retired the side in order in the eighth.
The Jackrabbits are scheduled to play Wednesday at Creighton. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
