Henry DeCaster pitched seven solid innings and South Dakota State capitalized on four North Dakota State errors to record a 5-2 victory and a sweep of a three-game Summit League baseball series Sunday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
With their fourth consecutive league victory, the Jackrabbits moved into sole possession of second place in the Summit League standings at 9-6 (13-22 overall). NDSU dropped to 17-16 overall and 5-10 in league play.
SDSU took a 1-0 lead three batters into the game as
Paul Jacobson hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a base hit by
Anthony Schneider and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Luke Ringhofer.
The Jackrabbits took advantage of three Bison errors in the third inning to score three times. Jacobson and Schneider reached on back-to-back errors to load the bases with one out, before
Luke Ringhofer hit a tapper back to the mound. The throw home retired
Zach Holt, but the relay throw to first hit Ringhofer running down the line, allowing Schneider to score and move both Jacobson and Ringhofer into scoring position.
Jesse Munsterman then lined a single to left-center to plate both Jacobson and Ringhofer.
DeCaster kept NDSU off the board until the lone Jackrabbit error of the game led to two Bison runs in the top of the fifth. Drew Fearing drove in both Logan Busch and Andy Wicklund with a two-out single to left field. Fearing notched two of NDSU's eight hits, while Taylor Sanders went 3-for-4.
A left-hander from Shoreview, Minnesota, DeCaster struck out two, walked one and scattered five hits in seven-plus innings for his longest collegiate outing.
Greg Casper recorded the final six outs, including four on strikeouts, to earn his third save of the season.
SDSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth as the fourth Bison error of the game led to Ringhofer scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Phil Velez. The Jackrabbits tallied only one hit between the second and seventh innings before notching two of their five hits of the game in the eighth.
Blake Stockert was the hard-luck losing pitcher for NDSU. The left-hander allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits with three walks and a strikeout over 4 1/3 innings. Fellow left-hander Chris Choles pitched the final 3 2/3 innings.
The Jackrabbits close out their homestand Wednesday, facing Mayville State (N.D.) at 3 p.m.
