Western Illinois right-hander Ian Koch struck out seven South Dakota State batters in a complete-game effort, leading the Fighting Leathernecks to a 5-1 victory in the opening game of a three-game Summit League baseball series Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
With the win, WIU improved to 12-25 overall and 9-10 in league play. The Jackrabbits dropped to 16-25 overall and 10-9 in The Summit League.
The Fighting Leathernecks received production up and down their lineup as they scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Nick Schrader plated the first run of the game with a single up the middle and Mark Garton drove in the third-inning run with an infield single.
Chris Tschida, who was 3-for-5, added a run-scoring in the fourth that helped lead to knocking out Jackrabbit starter
Andrew Clemen, who allowed nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Koch, who limited the Jackrabbits to six hits and walked two, held SDSU scoreless until
Cody Sharrow led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run down the left-field line. It was Sharrow's third home run of the season.
SDSU reliever
Henry DeCaster kept the Fighting Leathernecks off the board until tiring in the ninth. Ninth-place hitter Cord Church's fourth hit of the game, a double to left field, scored two runs to provide the final margin. Church's double was the lone extra-base hit among WIU's 16 hits in the game.
Luke Ringhofer and
Newt Johnson each tallied two hits for the Jackrabbits.
Matt Johnson singled with two outs in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to 19 games, tying Tyson Fisher (2005) for the longest hitting streak by a Jackrabbit player in the Division I era.
The two squads are scheduled to play the middle game of their series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
