FARGO, N.D. – Brayden Resch delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, providing the winning margin for North Dakota State in a 4-2 victory over South Dakota State in Summit League baseball action Thursday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the win, the Bison kept their postseason tournament hopes alive in improving to 28-24 overall and 11-17 in The Summit League. SDSU dropped to 20-32 overall and 12-16 in league play.
The Jackrabbits grabbed a 1-0 lead four batters into the game.
Tony Kjolsing led off with an infield single and moved to third base on a double down the left-field line by
Paul Jacobson. Kjolsing later scored on a groundout off the bat of
Jesse Munsterman.
Jacobson's double was the 200
th hit of his career, becoming the 17
th Jackrabbit in program history to reach the milestone.
NDSU grabbed its first lead of the game in the third inning on a two-run single by Paul Funk, but SDSU rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth on a double to left-center by Kjolsing that scored
Cody Sharrow.
The game-winning rally by the Bison started with a one-out walk to Funk that was followed by a double to left field by Ben Petersen. Resch then stepped to the plate and lined a 3-1 pitch from Jackrabbit starter
Andrew Clemen into right field to score both Funk and Petersen.
SDSU loaded the bases against Bison reliever Brian VanderWoude with one out in the top of the ninth, but came up empty as Jacobson and
Luke Ringhofer were retired on a foul popout and fly ball to right, respectively. The Jackrabbits stranded 10 runners in the game and were 0-for-13 batting with runners in scoring position.
Kjolsing and Sharrow each tallied two of SDSU's eight hits. Ringhofer reached on a hit and a walk to extend his streak of games reaching base safely to 44, one shy of the Jackrabbits' Division I-era record set last season by
Zach Coppola. NDSU's seven hits were spread out among seven different players.
Clemen struck out six and walked three in 7 1/3 innings.
VanderWoude picked up the win in relief after pitching three shutout innings. He struck out two and walked three. Bison starter Blake Stockert walked two and struck out two over the first six innings.
