South Dakota State rallied from a five-run deficit to take the lead and held on for a 13-12, weather-interrupted win over Fort Wayne in Summit League action Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.
With their fourth consecutive win over Fort Wayne, the Jackrabbits improved to 18-26 overall and 12-10 in league play. The Mastodons dropped to 21-24 overall and 6-16 in The Summit League.
Trailing 10-5, the Jackrabbits began their comeback with a three-run sixth inning.
Luke Ringhofer singled in the first run of the inning and
Jesse Munsterman followed with a double down the left-field line to score
Nick Smith. Ringhofer later scored on a groundout by
Matt Johnson.
SDSU took the lead with three more runs in the seventh inning.
Phil Velez started the rally with a double to right center that was followed by walks to Smith and Ringhofer to load the bases. With Fort Wayne going to the bullpen and closer Jake Weber,
Jesse Munsterman reached on an infield single to score Velez.
Matt Johnson and
Newt Johnson both drew bases-loaded walks to force in the tying and go-ahead runs.
After an hour and 13-minute weather delay, play resumed in the top of the eighth with
Landon Busch pitching a scoreless frame. SDSU added a pair of insurance runs in home half of the inning as
Paul Jacobson knocked in Velez with a hit to right field and Smith scored on a throwing error on the back half of the play. Jacobson, who hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 5-all in the fourth inning, ended the game with a pair of hits and four runs batted in.
The Mastodons wouldn't go down without a fight as they scored twice in the top of the ninth and moved the tying run to third base before Busch induced an infield popout to end the game. Brandon Soat, who was 6-for-6 with six RBI, sliced a double down the left-field line to plate the first run and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Shane Trevino.
Soat also tallied a two-run single in the second inning, a run-scoring single in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth. Kendall Whitman, Grant Wilson and Jackson Boyce all tallied three hits for the Mastodons, who finished with 19 hits.
Munsterman led the Jackrabbits' 12-hit attack by going 3-for-5.
Austin Kost picked up the win in relief, striking out three and allowing only a solo home run by Brock Logan in the sixth inning over his two innings of work. Busch earned his first save of the season.
Fort Wayne starter Evan Miller left with an apparent injury in the third inning after allowing three runs and five walks.
The two teams are scheduled to play the middle game of their three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday.
