South Dakota State women's soccer heads to Fort Wayne, Ind., this Saturday to open its 10th season of Summit League play. Kickoff with the Mastodons is set for 1 p.m. ET/ 12 p.m. CT, from Hefner Soccer Complex.
Scouting the Mastodons
The Mastodons are 3-8 overall this season, losing five of their last six non-conference contests. Fort Wayne has scored nine goals and allowed 23 on the year while firing 10.7 shots per game, compared to opponents' 18.8 shots per game. Kalliane Mogler was named the Summit League Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6 and leads the team with nine points, including four goals, this season. Defensively, Lauren Lawrence leads position players in minutes played while goalkeeper Kiley Dunning has started 11 games and leads the conference with 79 saves. South Dakota State has faced Drake every season since 2006 and leads the all-time series with the Mastodons, 7-2-1. SDSU holds a 1-1-1 record over the previous three meetings in Fort Wayne, Ind., last winning at Hefner Soccer Complex in 2010 in a 1-0 victory. The last contest between SDSU and IPFW on the road was a 3-3 draw in 2014. The teams have had two overtime and two double overtime contests in their history, and in the all-time series, South Dakota State has outscored the Mastodons, 25-8.Â
Last Time Out
South Dakota State women's soccer had three breakaway goals and took down an unbeaten Drake squad, 3-0, in its final non-conference game of the 2016 regular season. SDSU won its third straight game after outshooting the Bulldogs, 10-9, for the game and posted its fourth shutout of the year.
Nicole Hatcher led the team with a goal and an assist for the day, moving her season points total to a team-leading nine.
Carina McLennan and
Hannah Evans notched their first career goals at SDSU in the game while
Shelby Raper added her third assist of the year.
Maggie Smither earned the start in goal and recorded two saves.
Nicole Inskeep played the second half with one save. On the defensive end,
McKenzie Wolf played all 90 minutes for the Jacks as she,

Lindsee Larson and
Alexa Hepner were starters on the shutdown back line. On a breakaway in the 23rd minute, Raper dribbled into the box from the left side and shook the keeper by sliding a low cross to Hatcher near the far post, where the Jackrabbit forward netted her second goal of the year. SDSU pushed its lead to two 10 minutes later as McLennan notched her first career score at 33:23. On the far side of the field, Lamb fired a cross to the left post where McLennan was waiting and pushed her shot past a diving keeper. Over the final 10 minutes of the first period, SDSU saw Drake even the shot battle evened at 4-4 with three efforts in that span, but stood strong in the defensive end to lead 2-0 at the break. Out of the break, back-and-forth play carried the teams through a majority of the half until SDSU added another insurance goal at 82:43. On a counter attack, Hatcher took the ball down the left side of the field and crossed it to a near-wide open Evans who was streaking towards the top right corner of the box. As the keeper came out to challenge Evans, the sophomore transfer scored her first goal in a Jackrabbit uniform by ripping a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

- South Dakota State secured a winning non-conference regular season record for the fifth time since joining NCAA Division I with wins over UMKC and Drake in its last weekend out. SDSU last had a winning non-conference regular season record in 2013. The non-conference schedule included three contests with Power Five schools this season, and one against a school out of the BIG EAST. SDSU dropped a 1-0 contest at Iowa State (Big Ten) this year before drawing 1-1 against Kansas (Big 12) at home. The final Power Five contest for SDSU was a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in double overtime to Wisconsin. In addition to those three, SDSU also had a non-conference game with Creighton, out of the BIG EAST.
- South Dakota State is 5-0-1 this season in games it scores first, setting up a recipe for success as it enters conference play. Winless in games opponents have scored first this year (0-4), the Jacks will look for a fast-strike offense and solid defense to carry the program towards another title-worthy season.Â
- The Jacks are on a season-long winning streak of three games. The last three-game win streak for SDSU was Oct. 10-14, 2015 in wins over Omaha, Denver and South Dakota.
- Nicole Hatcher has now recorded points in three consecutive games, scoring and assisting against Green Bay and Drake and assisting against UMKC. Her five assists for 2016 already ranks No. 9 on SDSU's single-season record list.
- SDSU has scored three or more goals on four occasions this season, the highest total in that category since 2014 when the team had six three-plus goal games.
Three Straight Summit League POW's for SDSU
Along with its current three-game win streak, South Dakota State women's soccer has now claimed three consecutive Summit League Player of the Week honors, announced Sept. 19.
Nicole Hatcher earned a share of the award on the offensive side of the ball for her play last week, announced Monday by the conference office. Hatcher had a goal and two assists (four points) as SDSU went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating UMKC and Drake at home. The junior assisted on the first goal of the game against the Kangaroos and scored the game-winner against Drake. Hatcher has now recorded points in three straight games and holds the team lead with 10 points for the year.
Lindsee Larson was Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 12 while
Maggie Smither earned co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6.
Extra Time
SDSU has three double overtime games this season and sports a 1-1-1 record in those games. Historically, the Jacks have played well in overtime periods, claiming a 17-15-36 mark in combined games between single and double overtimes. The Jacks are 7-9 all-time in single overtime contests and 10-6-36 in double overtime games. The most overtime games in a season for SDSU was 12 in 2003. Since moving to the Division I level, SDSU's overtime high is six, which came last season.
Split Attack
As conference play opens, South Dakota State has already seen 11 players score this year, passing its totals from the previous two seasons and approaching the program record for that mark. SDSU had 10 players find the net in 2015 and nine score in 2014. The Jacks have reached double digits for individuals scoring on nine occasions, including a program-high 14 in 2010. The Jacks had 13 individuals find the net in 2003 and have twice (2008 and 2013) seen 12 players score.
Offensive Breakout
Held without a goal in the first two contests, SDSU has now scored in seven of its last eight games, with multiple goals in four of those games. The Jacks erupted for a season-high four goals in a shutout win against Green Bay in its last time out, and has twice notched three goals in a game.

Second Half Shutdown
South Dakota State's defense has allowed just five second half (or overtime) goals through 10 games this season, and only eight goals for the year overall. The Jacks opened the season without allowing a second half goal in the first five games.Â
Eyes on the Prize
Despite going winless through the opening two games, the Jackrabbits have proven over the years it's not how you start, but how you finish. Since joining the NCAA Division I ranks in 2004, SDSU has gone 0-2 to open a season six times but has finished with a losing record just once, earning a trip to the NCAA College Cup in two of the seasons that began 0-2.
Inskeep named to Watch List
Senior goalkeeper
Nicole Inskeep was named to The Summit League's Watch List as part of the preseason coaches poll release. The second-team All-Summit League selection from a year ago led the league in save percentage (.833) and goals-against average (1.82) while collecting five shutouts against league members. Overall, she recorded eight shutouts and posted a 1.06 goals-against average and registered a .815 save percentage and 11-5-3 record. As a starter in 20 of 21 matches in 2015, Inskeep enters the season ranked second in wins (27), shutouts (20), minutes (4,406) and matches played (49), third in starts (41), fourth in saves (195) and saves per game (3.97) and fifth in goals-against average (1.06) in the SDSU record book.
Jacks picked 2nd in Preseason Poll
For the third consecutive year, the South Dakota State women's soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2016 season, according to a preseason poll conducted by the league's head coaches. The two-time Summit League Tournament defending champions earned two first-place votes and 56 points in the poll ... Summit League regular-season champion North Dakota State was tabbed the preseason favorite with seven first-place votes and 63 points. The complete poll can be found on page three of the game notes.
2015 Season Review
South Dakota State earned its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, falling at Minnesota, 5-0, in the opening round. SDSU won the Summit League tournament over North Dakota State to earn an NCAA berth, claiming a 3-0 victory over the rival Bison. Overall, SDSU posted a 12-6-3 record and a 5-1-2 conference mark.
