The South Dakota State volleyball team lost in three sets to Denver in a Summit League match Sunday afternoon in front of 231 fans at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits (2-15, 0-4) lost 25-15, 25-20 and 25-10 to the Pioneers (10-5, 2-1).

Sophomore
Ashlynn Smith led SDSU with nine kills. Senior libero
Ellie Benson had a match-high 13 digs.

Kayla Principato led Denver with 10 kills.

Turning Points
South Dakota State opened the first set with 5-2 run with Smith and junior
Sierra Peterson recording kills. Denver tied the match at 9-9 and closed the set with a 16-6 run.

In the second set, the Pioneers had a 20-13 lead before the Jackrabbits used a 7-3 run fueled by a pair of Smith kills, a service ace from freshman
Hanna Jellema and kills from rookie
Maddie Fay and sophomore
Makenzie Hennen. DU ended the set with a pair of kills.

Denver took a 10-3 lead in the final set and outscored State 15-7 the rest of the way for the win.

"I thought we did some really good things in set one and two. I thought our passing was what held us back in those sets," third-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo said. "When you start looking at set three, we got off to a slow start and we were done from the get-go."

- Mattison Munger recorded 12 set assists and now has 1,938 career assists. She ranks 10th on the SDSU career list.
