VERMILLION, South Dakota—The South Dakota State volleyball team dropped a three-set Summit League match at South Dakota Friday night in front of 1,072 fans.
The Jackrabbits (2-17, 0-6) lost 25-16, 25-17 and 25-17 to the Coyotes (11-7-, 5-1).
Sophomore
Ashlynn Smith and freshman
Erin Cutts both had seven kills. Cutts' kills were a career high. Senior
Ellie Benson had a match-high 16 digs.
Hayley Dotseth had a match-high 12 kills and 16 digs to lead USD.
Turning Points
In the first set, the Jackrabbits were within three points at 10-7 before USD used a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 lead. The Coyotes then outscored SDSU 9-8 for the win.
Two service aces by freshman
Macy Smith gave the Jacks a 5-4 lead in the second set. Cutts' fourth kill of the match put SDSU up 8-6.
Ashlynn Smith tied the set for the sixth time, 11-11, with her fifth kill of the match. State fell behind 17-14, but junior
Payton Richardson's kill and a USD error pulled SDSU within one, 17-16. The Coyotes then closed the set on an 8-1 run to win the set.
USD took an 8-1 lead in the third set and had a five-point lead at 15-10. The Jackrabbits came back with a 7-3 run, fueled by a pair of kills from freshman
Hanna Jellema and a block by
Macy Smith and freshman
Maddie Fay, to pull within one, 18-17. USD then closed on a 7-0 run.
Notables
- Mattison Munger recorded six set assists. She now has 1,964 career assists, one set assist from ninth on the career assists list at SDSU.
