Scouting the Opponent
Alabama State enters Tuesday's matchup 0-2 on the season after a pair of Power 5 matchups to open the 2017-18 campaign. The Hornets lost at Mississippi State in the opener, 96-68, before dropping a Sunday contest at Iowa, 92-58.
ASU was picked sixth in their league poll after going 8-23 a year ago, but returns Rodney Simeon, who was picked to the preseason second team in October. He has not appeared in a game yet for the Hornets, who are led offensively through two contests by Ed Jones and Tobi Ewuosho. Jones and
Ewuosho are averaging 10.5 points per game for the Hornets, with Ewuosho adding a team-high 7.5 rebounds per contest and Jones hitting 47.4 percent from the field.
Around the rim, Brandon Johnson has pulled down 6.5 rebounds in two games to go with a 10.0 ppg scoring average, shooting 66.7 from the field over 54 minutes thus far in 2017-18.
Lewis Jackson is in his 13th season leading the Hornets, posting a 181-195 record in that span.
The Jackrabbits and Hornets have never faced each other.
Tacoma Talent
Tacoma, Washington native David Jenkins Jr. is the lone West coast native on the Jackrabbits' roster this season, and has racked up the points through the first two games of his freshman season.
Jenkins hit double figures in both contests, leading the team with 16 in the season opener against UC Irvine. He is the first freshman since Steve Holdren (Nov. 19, 2004 at Buffalo) to lead the Jackrabbits in scoring in his first collegiate game.
Jenkins scored over 2,000 points in his high school career before spending a year at Sunrise Christian Academy Prep School. He was named as a newcomer to watch in The Summit League by TheAthletic.com's John Rohde.
Dynamic Duo
Teammates
Mike Daum and
Reed Tellinghuisen are back after leading the team in scoring a year ago, and rank among the nation's best as a scoring duo with over 2,400 points between them in their careers. The Jacks are fifth in total career points as a pair as of Nov. 13, 2017 and fourth nationally in scoring average from a year ago.
Daum Named to Award Watch Lists
Mike Daum was earned a spot on three national award watch lists for the 2017-18 season, being named a preseason favorite for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year, Oscar Robertson Player of the Year and Lute Olson Player of the Year awards.
- The Karl Malone Award is presented by the Naismaith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its fourth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's college basketball. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2018 Karl Malone Award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 6, 2018.
- Daum was selected as one of 32 players on the 2017-18 Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List, announced Nov. 6 by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The award is presented to the national player of the year by its namesake at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio. In mid-March, the USBWA will announce its 2017-18 All-America Team and, at that time, finalists will also be chosen for the player of the year. Once finalists are announced, the entire USBWA membership will vote for the winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy.
- He was announced as one of 40 selections on the CollegeInsider.com Lute Olson Award Watch List Nov. 6 as well. The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons. The 2017-18 Lute Olson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
Preseason All-Conference Team
Mike Daum and
Reed Tellinghuisen made repeat appearances on the Summit League's Preseason All-League teams, announced early-October. Daum was the Preseason Player of the Year with First Team honors while Tellinghuisen picked a Second Team nod for the second straight season.
Daum is the second Jackrabbit to be named Preseason All-Conference and the first to do it twice, joining Nate Wolters (2012-13).
Battle on the Boards
Winning the rebounding battle was key to the Jackrabbits' success last season, as the team was 16-1 when out-rebounding its opponent. In games the team had the same or fewer rebounds, however, SDSU held a 2-16 mark.
This season, the Jacks are 1-0 when winning the rebounding battle and 1-0 when being out-rebounded. The Jacks did go plus-one in boards in the second half against UC Irvine, despite losing the overall rebound count.
Second Half Success
After posting a 2.8 points per game average through nonconference play last season,
Chris Howell burst onto the season as a top scoring option for the Jackrabbits in the second-half of the season, averaging 11.4 points per game in Summit League play with double figures in 10 of the final 12 games in the season. He has seen time in both games in 2017-18 with a 2.5 ppg scoring average.

Holding the Key
Incoming junior transfer Brandon Key will be crucial to the Jackrabbit success this season, inheriting the starting point guard spot after the departure of last-year's graduate transfer
Michael Orris.
Key averaged over seven assists per game last season at Southwest Tennessee Community College, ranking fifth in NJCAA.
He was named as a newcomer to watch in the league by TheAthletic.com's John Rohde in preseason and in the season opener scored five points with a team-high four assists, committing just one turnover. He followed the performance with another four-assist game against Mary.

SDSU Last Time Out (Nov. 12, 2017)
South Dakota State men's basketball took care of business Sunday at Frost Arena, downing the University of Mary, 78-54, in front of 1,248 fans.
The Jackrabbits (2-0) shot 42.9 percent from the field and got to the line 32 times, hitting 22 free throws as a team.
SDSU's defense forced 14 turnovers and limited Mary to 28.3 percent shooting from the field. The Marauders did not hit a field goal in the final 5:46 of the game.
State went plus-14 on the boards and scored 18 second-chance points off of 13 offensive rebounds.
Mike Daum led the way with a 22-point, 13-rebound double-double, adding a career-high three blocks in the effort. It was his 12th career double-double and 33rd game with 20 or more points.
David Jenkins Jr. dropped 13 points for his second-consecutive double-figure scoring performance, hitting two 3-pointers while
Ian Theisen put up 10 points and five rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Reed Tellinghuisen just missed a double-double of his own, adding nine points and nine boards on the day.
Brandon Key dished four assists with five points while
Tevin King grabbed seven boards, dished two assists and came up with two steals.
The Jacks started strong, building a 15-9 lead in the opening seven minutes, but a cold streak from the field allowed Mary to answer and take a 19-17 lead inside the eight-minute mark.
State recovered the momentum, however, and outscored the Marauders 22-9 (including a streak of nine unanswered) the rest of the half to hold an 11-point advantage at the break (39-28). Daum and Jenkins and eight points each in that stretch.
The Jackrabbits opened the second half with a 13-4 spurt to build a 20-point lead (52-32), capping an 11-0 run that lasted over three minutes with a 3-pointer from
Lane Severyn at 14:27.
Down the stretch, Mary closed the gap to 17 twice, but that's as close as it would come the rest of the way.
