The Setup
- South Dakota State welcomes Oral Roberts to town this Saturday, Feb. 4 for the 25th annual Lamb Bonanza. Tipoff from Frost Arena is set for 4:30 p.m., as the Jacks close out their current two-game homestand.
- Saturday's game is a rematch from a Jan. 12 matchup in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that saw Oral Roberts pick up a 94-88 win over the Jackrabbits. Mike Daum had 32 points for the Jacks in that game while Reed Tellinghuisen (14 points), A.J. Hess (13 points) and Chris Howell (11 points) were in double figures as well. For the Golden Eagles, Albert Owens and Kris Martin had 24 and 20 points, respectively as all five starters scored in double digits.
- This is the 19th meeting all-time between the schools and the all-time series is tied up, 9-all. SDSU had won six straight in the series entering 2016-17 and will look to return to their winning ways against the Golden Eagles. The Jacks are 5-3 against ORU inside Frost Arena.
- SDSU is 4-6 in conference play with an 11-14 overall mark, sitting in a three-way tie for sixth place in The Summit League standings. ORU is ninth currently in the conference with a 3-7 mark and the Golden Eagles are 7-17 overall.
- The Lamb Bonanza highlights the school's support of lamb and wool industries in South Dakota. As part of the festivities, lamb pelts will be auctioned during halftime.Â
Scouting the Golden Eagles
- Oral Roberts opened conference play 0-3 but won three of their next four, but enter Saturday on a three-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles are looking for their first road win of the season, 0-10 in games away from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- Albert Owens (17.0 ppg), Jalen Bradley (14.3 ppg) and Kris Martin (14.2 ppg) are averaging double figures in scoring for Oral Roberts and fellow starter Emmanuel Nzekwesi is close behind at 9.6 points per game.Â
- Nzekwesi and Owens lead the team with 158 (6.6 per game) and 136 (5.7 per game) rebounds, respectively.Â
- Owens has attempted 333 field goals this season, good for 35th in NCAA Division I, and with 161 field goal makes he is 23rd nationally.
- Bradley has dished out 100 assists for the season and leads the conference with over 34 minutes played per game.Â
- Bradley's 2.56 assist-to-turnover ratio is 44th nationally. He also ranks 16th nationally with 828 total minutes played this season.
- As a team, Oral Roberts is averaging 76.0 points per game and allowing 80.9 on average.Â

- The Jacks have set a new school single-game record for 3-pointers made twice this season. Entering 2016-17, the previous mark was 15, set at Oakland on Dec. 31, 2008. SDSU hit 16 at Idaho on Nov. 21 and reset the record Jan. 21, 2017 against Fort Wayne, sinking 17 from long range.
- Mike Daum set a school record for 3-pointers made and attempted against Fort Wayne on Jan. 21, going 10 of 16 beyond the arc. Daum's 10 3-pointers made is fourth most in Summit League history.
- With 23 appearances this season, A.J. Hess is just outside the top 10 of 3-pointers made (No. 10 is 68) and attempted (No. 10 is 176).
Charity Stripe Success
- South Dakota State has gotten to the free throw line more than its opponents in 19 of 25 games this season and have trailed in free throw attempts five times this season, though three have come in the last four games. The Jackrabbits are shooting just under 80 percent (77.7) on free throws this season, have four players at or above the 80 percent mark and nine active players shooting above 70 percent on free throws.
- As of Feb. 1, South Dakota State ranks 39th in free throw attempts (551), 10th nationally in free throws made (428) and 10th in NCAA Division I in free throw percentage (.777).Â
- SDSU is third in the conference in free throw attempts while sitting second in makes and first in percentage.Â
- From Dec. 7 to Dec. 22, Mike Daum hit a school record 43 consecutive free throws, breaking the previous record of 35, set by Garrett Callahan in 2008-09. Over the final seven non-conference games Daum hit 60 of 63 at the charity stripe (95.2 percent).
- Mike Daum set a school record with 16 made free throws (out of 16 attempts) against Murray State after tying the previous school record with 13 made free throws (out of 13 attempts) against Idaho (Dec. 10).
- As of Feb. 1, Mike Daum remains the national leader in free throw makes (164) and is third in attempts (189).

- The Jacks own a 71-5 record at Frost Arena over the last five seasons, which includes perfect home records in four of the last five years. That span includes two home winning streaks of 30 or more games.
- SDSU's 34-game winning streak ranked as the nation's second longest active streak when it ended Wednesday, Dec. 28. The streak began Jan. 30, 2014.
- SDSU won 30 consecutive home games from Jan. 29, 2011 to Nov. 14, 2013.
- SDSU put together undefeated seasons inside Frost Arena the following years: 1984-85 (18-0), 2002-03 (17-0), 2011-12 (14-0), 2012-13 (13-0), 2014-15 (13-0), and 2015-16 (12-0).

Player Quick Hits
- Michael Orris has 32 assists over the last four games after tallying 26 assists in the nine games prior. He had a career-high 10 assists against Fort Wayne on Jan. 21, which was the most for a Jackrabbit since Nate Wolters went for 12 against Fort Wayne on March 11, 2013.
- A.J. Hess went down with an arm injury at Denver on Jan. 23. He has not played in the last two conference games and is not expected to be available this weekend.
- After a slow start to the season where A.J. Hess scored just 11 points total in the first four games, the graduate transfer raised his average to 10.8 points per game with 14 double figure scoring games and a double-double before an injury stalled his graduate transfer season. Hess has reached double figures in six consecutive games he has appeared in and in 10 of his last 11.
- A.J. Hess came to South Dakota State with 840 career points at Southern Utah. On Dec. 28, 2016, Hess scored his 1,000 career point against North Dakota State.
- Cole Gentry, who started four games for the Jackrabbits earlier this season, has been granted his release from the program.
- A.J. Hess posted his first career double-double on Jan. 4 at Western Illinois, scoring 13 points to go alongside a career-high 14 rebounds.Â
- A.J. Hess pulled down 42 total rebounds over 15 non-conference games to open the year, but in the first half of conference play Hess had 51 over eight games. Hess set career-highs in rebounds against North Dakota State (10) and Western Illinois (14).Â
- Seven times this season the Jacks have seen four players reach double figures. The Jacks last did it Feb. 1 when Michael Orris (18), Reed Tellinghuisen (17), Mike Daum (16), Skyler Flatten (16) and Chris Howell (15) reached the mark against Western Illinois.
- Twice this season South Dakota State has had two players score over 20 points in the same game. A.J. Hess (31) and Mike Daum (23) score 20-plus in a loss for the first time since Feb. 10, 2016 at Omaha when Daum and Reed Tellinghuisen reached that mark. On Dec. 3 against Kansas City, Andre Wallace (21) and Daum (22) broke the 20-point mark in a win for the first time since Daum and George Marshall did it on Feb. 13, 2016 against South Dakota.
- SDSU has had five different players hit double figures in a game three times this season. The Jacks first did it in the win over Minnesota Crookston on Nov. 30, 2016. SDSU also did it Jan. 7 against Omaha and against Western Illinois Feb. 1.
- Over a span of three games from Nov. 21 to Nov. 26, South Dakota State saw A.J. Hess, Reed Tellinghuisen and Mike Daum all reach double figures and score a majority of SDSU's points. Of the 200 points SDSU scored in those games, the three Jackrabbits had 161, or 80.5 percent of the points. Daum scored 63 points in that stretch (31.5 percent), Hess had 57 points (28.5 percent) and Tellinghuisen had 41 points (20.5 percent). Mike Daum posted his first-ever 30-point game against Milwaukee on Nov. 27, finishing with 32 points off of 10-for-13 shooting in the field and an 11-for-13 effort from the charity stripe. Daum also dished out a career-high six assists.
- A.J. Hess put together SDSU's first 30-point game at Idaho (scoring 31) since Nov. 26, 2013 when Jordan Dykstra had 32 against Lehigh.Â
- Reed Tellinghuisen has hit double figures in 17 of 25 games this season, pushing his career mark in that category to 45 games with double figures. Tellinghuisen is second on the active career scoring list and could join the 1,000 points club by the end of the season.
- Reed Tellinghuisen ranks 26th nationally with 796 total minutes played this season.
Team Quick Hits
- South Dakota State has shot 50 percent or better from the field in four of its last six games. In those four games, SDSU was above 50 percent in the first half, and twice shot better than 60 percent on field goals.
- The Jackrabbits were whistled for only 10 fouls on Nov. 30 against UMC and on Dec. 16 versus Murray State, and only eight on Nov. 27 against Milwaukee. The Jacks have been whistled for less than 15 personal fouls 12 times this season.Â
- The Jacks are 17th nationally and lead the conference with just 16.0 personal fouls per game (as of Feb. 1 stats release).
- At least one Jackrabbit has scored in double figures over the last 301 games dating back to Jan. 12, 2008 at IUPUI when Anthony Cordova has nine points to lead the Jacks.

SDSU snapped a streak of 90 games without a 1,000 point scorer when Mike Daum joined the club on Jan. 21, 2017. SDSU has now restarted a streak of two games with a 1,000 point scorer on the court.
- The last time SDSU went 0-2 to open the year was 2014-15 when the squad finished with a 24-11 overall record and was a Summit League regular season co-champion.
- SDSU is 91-18 all-time in home openers (where records available). Dating back to 2004-05, SDSU's first year of DI transition, SDSU is 11-2. Since joining the Summit League in 2007-08, SDSU is 9-2 in home openers.
- SDSU is now 72-39 in season-openers all-time. The Jacks are 5-8 in season-opening games at the Division I level.
Jackrabbits' Last Time Out -- Feb. 1, 2017
  South Dakota State saw five players reach double figures and cruised to a 98-65 win over Western Illinois in front of 2,017 fans Wednesday evening at Frost Arena.
  The Jackrabbits (10-14, 3-6 Summit League) outscored the Leathernecks in the paint, 62-20, and shot 57.6 percent from the field. SDSU hit 15 of 17 from the charity stripe as well.Â
  SDSU won the rebounding battle as well, 39-23, and used 11 offensive rebounds to help with a 20-2 advantage in second chance points.
  WIU (7-13, 4-5 Summit League) shot 42.3 percent in the game and was led by C.J. Duff's 16 points. The Leathernecks hit eight 3-pointers with three from Duff.Â

Michael Orris led the team with 18 points on the night, dishing out eight assists while committing zero turnovers at the point.
Reed Tellinghuisen dropped 17 with three 3-pointers and
Mike Daum and
Skyler Flatten both recorded 16 points. Tellinghuisen, Â Â Daum and Flatten all had five rebounds for the Jacks.Â
Chris Howell was in double figures as well with 15 points.

Tevin King each pulled down six boards for SDSU.
  SDSU fell behind 8-2 in the opening two minutes before the Jacks outscored the Leathernecks 26-7 over the next eight minutes. That burst included runs of seven, four, nine and six unanswered to give State a 28-15 lead with 10 minutes to go in the half.Â
  A scoring drought of four-plus minutes struck the Jacks as WIU climbed back within single digits (28-21), but SDSU responded with a 12-2 run to lead by 17 (38-23) at 2:16.Â
  The final 90 seconds saw the Leathernecks put together a small rally, but the Jacks still carried a double-digit advantage into the half, ahead 45-34.
  SDSU shot 56.3 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while WIU was 45.8 percent on field goals.

Michael Orris led the Jacks with 12 points at the break, going perfect from the field (5 of 5) and at the line (2 of 2) while dishing four assists.
Reed Tellinghuisen had 11 for SDSU in the half behind all three of the Jacks' 3-pointers.
Mike Daum had eight points while
Lane Severyn led the team with six first half rebounds.
  The Jacks' advantage shrunk to five (49-44) through the first three and a half minutes of the second half before SDSU shut the early rally down with 10 straight to lead, 59-44, just past the under-16 media. Daum,
Tevin King, Tellinghuisen and Severyn all scored in that run.Â
  Inside eight minutes to go with SDSU ahead 18 (74-56),
Skyler Flatten hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to move SDSU's lead past 20 before King picked up a steal on the other end and threw down a one-handed slam that brought Jackrabbit fans to their feet. Those plays were part of a larger 19-4 run over a span of more than five minutes that moved SDSU ahead 29 (86-57) with 5:40 to play. That rally included two separate 7-0 runs after a 5-0 spurt started the push.Â
  The final five minutes saw WIU slow the Jackrabbit rallies, but SDSU pushed its lead over 30 points on a Severyn 3-pointer with 1:41 to play before
Beau Brown sunk the game's final basket, hitting a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining for his first career points.
Golden Eagles' Last Time Out -- Jan. 31, 2017

  TULSA, Okla. – Aaron Anderson scored a career high 21 points to lead a cast of four double-figure scorers for the Oral Roberts men's basketball team, but it wasn't enough as Denver caught fire in the second half of a 93-69 Denver win.
  Anderson's 21 points came less than two weeks after notching his first career 20-point game against South Dakota. Along with Anderson, Emmanuel Nzekwesi helped carry the load offensively early and the freshman forward finished the game with 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Kris Martin poured in 14 points with 12 coming in the second half and Jalen Bradley added 10 points.
  Daniel Amigo and Jake Pemberton each scored 20 to lead the Pioneers, who scored 59 points and shot 72 percent (21-29) in the second half. Joe Rosga had six assists as the Pioneers tallied 20 assists on 33 made baskets.
Turning Point
  After being down seven, a Bradley 3-pointer tied the game at 54-54 with 10:15 to play, but Denver responded with a 7-0 run of their own and ORU was never able to recover.
Individual Leaders
  Oral Roberts: Anderson led ORU in scoring for the first time in his career with 21 points and also had a team-high four assists. Nzekwesi had eight of the team's 26 rebounds and Bradley earned three steals.
  Denver: Amigo and Pemberton each scored 20 while Rosga had seven rebounds and six assists.
Inside the Box Score
  ORU shot 43 percent (23-53) for the game, but hit just 25 percent (5-20) from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 18-25 (72 percent) from the free throw line.
  Denver shot 59 percent (33-56) for the game including the sizzling 72 percent (21-29) mark in the second half. The Pioneers hit 69 percent (11-16) from 3-point range and 73 percent (16-22) from the free throw line.
  Denver led the rebounding battle 36-26 and out-scored ORU 30-26 in the paint.
New Faces, Great Places
South Dakota State's hiring of first-year head coach
T.J. Otzelberger was a nod to the state's motto, "Great Faces, Great Places." The new face of the program, announced April 14, 2016, is in his first-ever heading coaching role, but has been groomed for the position over several assistant stops, working with Lorenzo Romar (Washington), Fred Hoiberg (Iowa State), Greg McDermott (Iowa State) and Steve Prohm (Iowa State). Alongside Otzelberger, new members of the coaching staff include
Ben Walker, a Creighton hall of fame member who last coached at Jackson State,
Eric Henderson, a former Wayne State (Neb.) standout who spent last season with SDSU's rival, North Dakota State, and
Tyler Glidden, the director of operations who has worked at Creighton and Iowa State.
Rob Klinkefus was the lone holdover from former head coach Scott Nagy's staff, and enters his 11th season at SDSU.
20-Win Seasons
Reaching the 20-win mark has become a standard at South Dakota State University over the previous five seasons, as the Jackrabbits have done in four times in that span and 23 times in the program's history.Â
2015-16 Season Review
The 2015-16 Jackrabbit Men's Basketball season featured several highlights throughout the campaign, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament, a conference tournament title and earning a share of The Summit League's regular season championship. The Jackrabbits earned the No. 12 seed in last year's West Region, narrowly missing an upset over fifth-seeded Maryland in the first round, falling 79-74. Prior to that, SDSU earned the nickname "Cardiac Jacks" with a run through the conference tournament, pulling off three-point quarterfinal and one-point semifinal wins before earning the automatic bid with a 67-59 win over NDSU in the final.
Mike Daum was named the tournament MVP and
Deondre Parks was a member of the All-Tournament team. For the regular season, SDSU posted its second consecutive undefeated home record while three players garnered All-Conference honors in addition to other national awards.
Mike Daum was named the Summit League Freshman and Sixth Man of the Year in addition to earning spots on the All-Conference First Team and the All-Newcomer Team.
George Marshall was an All-Conference First Team selection and
Deondre Parks claimed an honorable mention nod. On the national level, Marshall and Parks earned NABC Division I All-District 12 honors with First and Second Team nods, respectively, and Daum was named a Kyle Macy All-American. After the season, longtime head coach Scott Nagy resigned after completing his 21st season at the helm.
