Winners of eight of its last 11, the South Dakota State softball team wraps up early season tournament play this weekend in Iowa City, Iowa at the Hawkeye Invitational, March 17-19.
The Jackrabbits (12-14) play five games in the three-day event, taking on Northern Illinois Friday at 1 p.m. before taking on Creighton and Iowa on Saturday at Noon and 4 p.m., respectively. The Jacks wrap up the event Sunday against Valparaiso at 11 am., and the Hawkeyes at 1 p.m.
SDSU went 4-1 at last weekend's USF-Under Armour Invitational after a 4-2 performance in neutral site games earlier in the week. The team raised their combined batting average to .261 with 30 doubles, seven triples and 13 home runs of the year while outscoring opponents, 108-99, through 26 games.
Reigning Summit League Player of the Week
Ali Herdliska is hitting .338 for the Jacks with nine two-baggers, two triples and two home runs while driving in 26.
Julia Andersen joins Herdliska and
Lyndsey Crist in starting all 26 games for SDSU, as Andersen is hitting .274 (23 of 84) with eight multi-hit games. Crist is 18 for 71 (.254) this season and has five doubles.
Emily Ensrud made her Jackrabbit debut last week, and in nine games since is hitting .385 (10 of 26) with six runs scored and four RBI.
In the circle, State holds a 3.02 combined ERA, allowing 75 earned runs over 174 total innings with 136 strikeouts.
Ashlyn Bender (2.46 ERA) is 6-4 on the year and has struck out 37 while
Abby Deane (3.08 ERA) leads the team with 87 strikeouts and won six games last weekend.
