MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin—After trailing by two sets, the South Dakota State volleyball team came back to win the third set, but Idaho State prevailed in the final set 25-20 for the win Saturday at the Pepsi Panther Invitational.

The Jackrabbits (1-2) lost 11-25, 18-25, 25-21 and 20-25 to the Bengals (1-2).

Sophomore Makenzie Hennen led the Jackrabbits with 11 kills. Junior Sierra Peterson added 10 kills, three service aces, eight digs and two block assists. Junior Payton Richardson had career highs of eight kills and four total blocks, and freshman Macy Smith added six kills.

Senior Ellie Benson had a team-high 11 digs and junior Mattison Munger added 29 set assists.

Turning Point
After putting together a 6-0 run late in the third set, the Jackrabbits came from behind for the win. Sophomore Ashlynn Smith and Richardson registered the final point with a block.

It was over when …
South Dakota State used a 5-0 run in the fourth set, fueled by a pair of Hennen kills and a Peterson service ace, to pull within one, 21-20. Idaho State closed the match with a kill and two Jackrabbit errors.

"I'm extremely disappointed in our overall play today. On the upside, we continued to fight and get better throughout the match," third-year head coach Nicole Cirillo said. "We have seen the good and the bad this opening weekend and I am looking forward to getting back to practice and getting better."

Notables

Mattison Munger's 29 set assists now give her 1,609 career set assists. She needs 79 set assists to move into the top 10 at State.
Sierra Peterson had a personal-best eight kills.

South Dakota State returns to action when it hosts the Hampton Inn Jackrabbits Invitational Sept. 1-2 in the friendly confines of Frost Arena. The Jacks play CSU Bakersfield Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. Action starts at 12:30 p.m. with the Roadrunners playing Valparaiso.
