Jacks establish 25 new records in 2018

The South Dakota State University football team continually rewrote the Jackrabbit record book during the recently completed 2018 season, setting or extending 25 school records.

As a team, the Jackrabbits broke three offensive records set the previous season, including total points scored (553), total offense (6,247 yards) and average total offense (480.5 yards per game) despite playing one fewer game. In addition, SDSU surpassed a 68-year-old record for scoring average with 42.5 points per game, bettering the 38.1 points per game scored by the undefeated 1950 squad.

The Jackrabbits also set a new standard for team punting with an average of 42.5 yards on 56 attempts in 2018.

SDSU established five single-game records in a 90-6 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, including posting a new scoring mark.

Individually, senior quarterback Taryn Christion put his name at the top of the list in seven different career categories. Christion's marks of 11,535 passing yards, 13,050 yards of total offense and 104 passing touchdowns also set Missouri Valley Football Conference records. In addition, Christion set five single-game and seven single-season records in previous seasons at SDSU.

Sophomore wide receiver Cade Johnson set a new Jackrabbit record with 17 touchdown receptions, while tying the SDSU single-game mark with four touchdown catches in the Sept. 8 season opener against Montana State.

Junior kicker Chase Vinatieri added single-game and single-season records for extra points with 11 versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff and 66 made for the entire season (in a record 71 attempts). Vinatieri also holds SDSU career marks with 180 PATs and 189 extra-point tries through only three seasons.

The Jackrabbits finished the 2018 campaign with a 10-3 overall record, including a 6-2 mark in the MVFC. SDSU qualified for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the seventh consecutive year, advancing to the semifinal round for the second year in a row.
