COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The South Dakota State University baseball team ran its Summit League winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 win in the opener, but Oral Roberts came back to earn a split of the baseball doubleheader, 7-3, in Game 2 Friday afternoon at Doc Ross Park.
The Jackrabbits moved to 10-21 overall and 8-6 in league play. Oral Roberts ended the day 22-15 overall and stayed atop the Summit League standings at 12-5.
Game 1: SDSU 3, Oral Roberts 1
Sophomore left-hander Brady Stover struck out 10 batters over 6 1/3 innings and the Jackrabbits found just enough offense to claim the opener.
SDSU broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the third inning, when Anthony Schneider walked and scored from first on Nick Smith's double to the left-center gap with two outs.
Stover, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and had two double plays turned behind him, struck out at least one batter in every inning, including fanning the side in order in the second.
The Jackrabbits carried their 1-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth, adding to their advantage with small ball. Smith recorded his second hit of the day and Newt Johnson and Josh Falk followed with walks to load the bases. Phil Velez then stepped to the plate against ORU reliever Brady Womacks and executed a squeeze bunt that scored Smith. As the Golden Eagles were throwing the ball back to the pitcher, Johnson scampered home for the second run on the play and a 3-0 lead.
Oral Roberts put together a two-out rally in the top of the ninth against Jackrabbit reliever Derek Feige, scoring a run on a single by Nick Roark. Alex Marro then entered with the bases loaded and coaxed a groundout to first base to end the game.
Smith finished with both Jackrabbit hits, while Roark tallied two of ORU's five hits.
Golden Eagle starter Josh McMinn struck out eight and walked five over seven innings in a losing effort.
Game 2: Oral Roberts 7, SDSU 3
The Golden Eagles scored the final seven runs of the game to salvage the doubleheader split.
SDSU again took the early lead in the second inning. After drawing a leadoff walk, Newt Johnson came around to score on Gus Steiger's single through the left side. A dropped pop fly on the infield with two outs later in the frame allowed both Phil Velez and Steiger for a 3-0 advantage.
Noah Cummings launched a three-run home run to left field in the top of the third tied the game, and Oral Roberts grabbed the lead an inning later on a run-scoring double by Roark.
Reigning Summit League Pitcher of the Year Miguel Ausua settled down after early struggles to strike out five over six innings. Three Golden Eagle relievers combined for three shutout innings, including a four-strikeout performance by closer Kyler Stout over two frames, to secure the win.
ORU added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Riley Keizor in the seventh, then tacked on two more runs against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the eighth on Roark's fourth hit of the game, a run-scoring single, and RBI double by Cal Hernandez.
Spencer Henson added two hits for the Golden Eagles, who finished with 11 hits. Steiger was 3-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' five-hit effort.
SDSU starter Brady Moxham took the loss after striking out four and walking two over 4 1/3 innings.
