The South Dakota State track and field team continues competition for the outdoor season at the 109th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Jackrabbits will start competition on Thursday evening with junior
Emily Berzonsky scheduled to compete in the 10,000m at 5:55 p.m. and sophomore
Micah Mather penciled in for the 3,000m steeplechase at 7:22 p.m.

Competition will continue through Friday with five field events, three track events, and six relay races at Drake for the SDSU student-athletes.
Â
A contingent of State student-athletes will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open on Friday, hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. The Jacks are scheduled to compete in the track events, starting at 1 p.m. and run through 9:10 p.m.

South Dakota State returns to the Drake Relays on Saturday for the last day of competition. Another two field events and six relays are on the slate, along with Jackrabbits who make it to the finals of their respective events.

While most of the team competes at Drake on Saturday, some of the throwing group will travel to MSU-Moorhead and compete at the Ron Masanz meet, starting at 10 a.m.

Up Next
The schedule will take a turn to the Howard Wood Dakota Relays on the following weekend, May 4-5.

Then Jackrabbits will prep for The Summit League Outdoor Championships back in Tulsa, Okla. on May 10-12, hosted by Oral Roberts. The Jackrabbits have been in Tulsa twice early on in the season and once at ORU's ONEOK Sport Complex.

Ranked Jackrabbits
South Dakota State has eight Jackrabbits in the top 48 regionally of their respective events. The top 48 individuals (top 24 multi-event athletes) in the West Region at the end of the season will qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries on May 24-26 in Sacramento, Calif.

Last year, South Dakota State had eight NCAA West qualifiers competing in eight events on the men's side, while the women's team had five qualifiers competing in five events.

The USTFCCCA.org ranked South Dakota State 16th on the men's side, and 17th on the women's side in week four of the Midwest Regional rankings. The men moved up one spot outside the top 15 since last week, while the women's team jumped up four spots.

The USTFCCCA.org ranks the top four student-athletes in each event, from all of the Division I schools and ranks them. In order to be ranked in an event, the team must have four qualified student-athletes in that specific event.

The men's team has four of 12 eligible events ranked in the top 50, including the 10,000m squad (14th), shot put squad (37th), high jump squad (47th), and long jump squad (47th).

On the women's side, the Jacks have seven of the 10 eligible events in the top 100. The hammer (51st) and shot put (54th) squads are the lowest rankings for SDSU.

Men: Goehring is within 0.93 seconds of the top 800m mark ... the Jackrabbits have 3-4-5 in the 800m, each with their PR and Hanna (No. 5) is within 2.32 seconds of the league leader ... Burdick leads the 1,500m by 0.44 seconds, while within 2.01 seconds of the best mark in the 5,000m ... Jacks have three of the four best marks in the 10,000m (1. Cayo, 2. Capra, 4. Ivanecky) ... Cayo leads the league in the 10,000m with Capra 0.67 seconds behind him - their marks are 1:23.96 and 1:23.29 minutes better than the third-best mark ... Courter is within 2.50 inches of the best mark in the long jump and 11.50 inches from the triple jump ... Leiseth cracked the league's top five with last night's throw, meaning all five throwers are in the NCAA West qualifying round as of today.

Colton Bender reset the school's record for indoor weight throw four times throughout the season and has the school record for outdoor hammer throw (set in 2017).

Bryant Courter also was resetting school records during the indoor season in the triple jump. Throughout the season, he reset the school record four times and etching his name on three meet records (including in the indoor league championship record).

Courter also posted personal-best top 10 marks in the high jump and long jump indoors.

As for outdoors, he has tied his personal-best in the long jump, which is third all-time, and is within 7.50 inches of his personal-best triple jump, which is also third all-time.

Daniel Clarke has added top 10 marks in both the indoor and outdoor long jump marks, posting fourth all-time indoors and a tie for ninth-best outdoors.

Krista Steele finally got the school record in the indoor 800m at the league championships, chasing teammate
Oksana Covey's 2017 mark all year. She also was within 0.10 seconds of tying Covey's school record in the indoor 600m.

Steele has reset her outdoor 800m personal-best mark twice already this season, jumping into second all-time. She also notched a PR in the 1,500m, the same weekend she first reset her outdoor 800m PR.

Freshman
Trent Francom is making a big freshman splash, finishing with a share of the school record in the indoor pole vault with his big jump in the indoor championships. He is sharing the record with his brother, Reagan Francom and Lynn Olson.

As for outdoor season, he has jumped to seventh on the outdoor top 10 with his jump from last weekend.

Mason Leiseth and redshirt
Noah Huber have been juggling spots in the top 10 for shot put. Leiseth started out the outdoor season as 10th-best on the list, but Huber added his name to third-best the list, which kicked Leiseth off the list.

Last weekend in California, Leiseth recorded a PR on Thursday right behind Huber for fourth. The next day, he added another 1-02.25 feet to the PR, which carved his name into second all-time.

Just last night, he added another 1-01.50 feet to his PR to tie the school record. He's added 2-03.75 feet to his best throw in six days.

Leiseth is also eighth on the discus top 10 and second in the indoor shot put, ahead of his father, Dave Leiseth, who is now fifth, and Huber, who is third.

Last Time Out
The Jackrabbits added a last-minute meet to their schedule after canceling the travel plans to the USD Twilight on Tuesday.

Instead, SDSU went to Mount Marty to compete in the Mount Marty Twilight.
The team hoisted nine individual event champions with 17 personal-best marks on Wednesday at the Mount Marty Twilight.

Overall, there were 25 individual Jackrabbits who finished in the top-three in at least one event, and 17 of them finishing with at least one personal-best mark.

Mason Leiseth had two top-three finishes for winning the shot put and finishing third in the discus while freshman
Chloe Bermel recorded two personal-best marks in the 200m and 400m.

Leiseth reset his PR in the shot put for the third time in less than a week. He started the season ranked 10th on the school's all-time list before falling out of it briefly. Last Thursday, he rejoined the top 10 at fourth, and then moved up to second on Friday - increasing the PR by 1-02.25 feet.

Last night, he added another 1-01.50 feet to tie for the school record with John Delay's 1997 throw. That is totaling 2-03.75 feet in six days.

Kasie Vollmer grabbed another victory in the throwing events, along with sophomore
Dakota Leonhard in the javelin. It is Vollmer's second win of the season and Leonhard's first.

The men's triple jump crew went 1-2-3 in Yankton, S.D., just the second time in their career they've finished 1-2-3 (2017 USD/SDSU Dual). Sophomore
Bryant Courter grabbed his sixth career win - going undefeated in the indoor season.

Anthony Andera was another Jackrabbit carrying his winning streak to another meet. He won the pole vault competition at the NSU Twilight and then tied his outdoor season-best with a win tonight.

California & NSU Twilight Meets
The Jackrabbits had teams is two different parts of the country last weekend - one group in California competing in three different meets Wednesday through Friday, while another group competed in South Dakota and Iowa on Friday.

State student-athletes in California competed in the Bryan Clay Invitational, Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, and Mt. SAC Relays.

On the Wednesday and Thursday, senior
Vanessa Lane and sophomore
Evan Hieber recorded their first multi-events of the season at Azusa, Calif in the Bryan Clay Invite.

Lane finished third in the second heptathlon group, posting personal-best marks in the 100m hurdles and shot put (won) while notching season-best marks in the high jump and 200m. As a result, the Pequot Lakes, Minn. native scored her second-highest point total in the multi-event.

Hieber scored his personal-best mark in the decathlon, which ranks seventh best on the school's top 10. Setting five personal-best marks (shot put, 400m, discus, pole vault, and 1,500m) and winning the javelin totaled his sixth-place finish in group two of the decathlon.

The rest of the California Jackrabbits tallied 27 personal-best marks in with seven top-three finishes and one event winner.

Rachel King posted her fifth school record during the 2018 indoor/outdoor campaign as she competed in the 5,000m at the Bryan Clay Invite.

Then she recorded her personal-best mark in the 1,500m race. She beat her previous-best by 3.75 seconds and now has the school's second-fastest mark all-time, passing teammate
Emily Donnay.

Kendra Dykstra also recorded a personal-best time in the 1,500m, beating her previous-best mark by 7.32 seconds and earning the fourth-best mark in school history.

Mason Leiseth could not stop throwing PR's in the sunshine state. He set a personal-best in both the shot put and discus on Thursday afternoon at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, which were both on the school's top 10.

On Friday, he added another 1-02.25 feet to her best throw in the shot put and moved up to second on the school's top 10. Then he threw what would have been a personal-best mark, if not for Thursday's throw, in the discus to finish out the weekend.

Krista Steele ran two 800m races last weekend, with her last one becoming her personal-best time. It was her second time resetting her outdoor personal-best out of three attempts this season. Steele's time is second on the school's all-time list.

Kasie Vollmer recorded two marks in the discus and her first outdoor mark in the shot put. She was the lone Jackrabbit to finish in the top-three on Friday. Her toss in the discus was a season-best mark, just 7-01.00 from her PR - which is the school record.

Miatta Flemister-Smith ended the weekend leading the Jackrabbits in three individual events and a part of the team's best relay marks. Flemister-Smith posted her personal-best marks in the 100m and 200m on Thursday at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, which are eighth (tie) and ninth on the school's top 10 marks.

On Friday, the Champlin, Minn. native ran her first collegiate 400m, which is now the team's season-best mark, but just missed the school's top 10 by 0.05 seconds.

Chase Cayo and senior
Trevor Capra recorded their personal-best marks in the 10,000m on Thursday at the Mt. SAC Relays, which moved their names among Head Coach
Rod DeHaven. Cayo moved a just ahead of DeHaven, into fourth place, and Capra sits 0.05 seconds behind Coach in sixth place.

Also scoring personal-best marks was a South Dakota State group in Aberdeen, S.D., who tallied another 16 personal-bests and 14 event winners.

Haley Mottinger won the 100m hurdles with a personal-best mark, her first career win in the event. She also added her first collegiate 100m mark.

Kristin Pistulka and
Kayla Neff, along with freshman
Chloe Bermel posted personal-best marks in the 100m.

Neff also finished fourth in the 100m hurdles while Bermel posted a personal-best in the 200m. Both of them, along with Pistulka and freshman Madisson Gay finished second in the 4x100m relay.
