The South Dakota State track and field team prepares for the 93rd Howard Wood Dakota Relays, the final meet of the 2018 outdoor season before The Summit League Championships.

"The Howard Wood Dakota Relays has experienced phenomenal growth since the first one-day event was held May 4, 1923. Over the years it has become one of South Dakota's premier athletic events.

The 93rd running of the Relays is scheduled for May 4 through May 5, 2018. More than 3,000 middle school, high school, college and university student athletes will be competing. The dedication of hundreds of volunteers, the financial support of area businesses and the outstanding facilities makes the Howard Wood Dakota Relays the meet of choice for many area track fans." Schedule
Friday morning will start off at 10:30 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and then roll into the women's pole vault and men's triple jump at noon. Field events will carry on throughout the afternoon while the track events will begin at 2:40 p.m. with the women's 4x100m relay.

There will be high school events scattered in throughout the day, starting with the girl's 100m hurdles at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, the women's discus will begin the field events at 9 a.m. and the finals of the women's 100m hurdles is scheduled to kick off the track events for collegiate runners.

For high school competitors, it will begin with the boy's shot put and girls (class B) sprint medley at 9 a.m.

Dakota Relays Gold Medal Scholarship Winners
"The Dakota Relays Gold Medal scholarship was established in 2000. The Howard Wood Dakota Relays Board of Directors created the scholarship to reward South Dakota Track & Field student athletes of accomplishment who have chosen to continue participation in the sport at the collegiate level in our State. The Jackrabbits will travel to The Summit League Outdoor Championships back in Tulsa, Okla. on May 10-12, hosted by Oral Roberts. The Jackrabbits have been in Tulsa twice early on in the season and once at ORU's ONEOK Sport Complex.

Ranked Jackrabbits
South Dakota State has nine Jackrabbits in the top 48 regionally of their respective events. The top 48 individuals (top 24 multi-event athletes) in the West Region at the end of the season will qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries on May 24-26 in Sacramento, Calif.

Last year, South Dakota State had eight NCAA West qualifiers competing in eight events on the men's side, while the women's team had five qualifiers competing in five events.

The USTFCCCA.org ranks the top four student-athletes in each event, from all of the Division I schools and ranks them. In order to be ranked in an event, the team must have four qualified student-athletes in that specific event.

The men's team has three of 12 eligible events ranked in the top 50, including the 10,000m squad (15th), the shot put squad (38th), and the high jump squad (50th). Pole vault (52nd) and long jump (58th) are close to making the top 50.

On the women's side, the Jacks have seven of the 12 eligible events in the top 100. The hammer throw (41st), shot put (58th), and discus (59th) squads are the lowest rankings for SDSU.

Burdick leads the 1,500m by 0.44 seconds, and within 2.01 seconds of the best mark in the 5,000m ... Jacks have three of the five best marks in the 10,000m (1. Cayo, 2. Capra, 5. Ivanecky) ... Colton Bender reset the school record for indoor weight throw four times throughout the indoor season and has reset the school record for outdoor hammer throw twice this season, having first set the school record in 2017.

Sophomore
Bryant Courter also was resetting school records during the indoor season in the triple jump. Throughout the season, he reset the school record four times and etching his name on three meet records (including in the indoor league championship record).

Courter also posted personal-best top 10 marks in the high jump and long jump indoors.

As for outdoors, he has tied his personal-best in the long jump, which is third all-time, and is within 7.50 inches of his personal-best triple jump, which is also third all-time.

Daniel Clarke has added top 10 marks in both the indoor and outdoor long jump marks, posting fourth all-time indoors and a tie for ninth-best outdoors.

Krista Steele finally got the school record in the indoor 800m at the league championships, chasing teammate
Oksana Covey's 2017 mark all year. She also was within 0.10 seconds of tying Covey's school record in the indoor 600m.

Steele has reset her outdoor 800m personal-best mark twice already this season, jumping into second all-time. She also notched a PR in the 1,500m, the same weekend she first reset her outdoor 800m PR.

Freshman
Trent Francom is making a big freshman splash, finishing with a share of the school record in the indoor pole vault with his big jump in the indoor championships. He is sharing the record with his brother, Reagan Francom and Lynn Olson.

As for the outdoor season, he broke the school record wide open last weekend school's first-ever mark over 17 feet. He increased the school record by 5.50 inches.

Mason Leiseth and redshirt
Noah Huber have been juggling spots in the top 10 for shot put. Leiseth started out the outdoor season as 10th-best on the list, but Huber added his name to third-best the list, which kicked Leiseth off the list.

In California (April 19-20), Leiseth recorded a PR on Thursday right behind Huber for fourth. The next day, he added another 1-02.25 feet to the PR, which carved his name into second all-time.

At Mount Marty (April 25), he added another 1-01.50 feet to his PR to tie the school record. He's added 2-03.75 feet to his best throw in six days.

Leiseth is also eighth on the discus top 10 and second in the indoor shot put, ahead of his father, Dave Leiseth, who is now fifth, and Huber, who is third.

At the Drake Relays, the Jackrabbit relay teams posted a few top 10 all-time marks and school records in the three-day weekend at the Blue Oval.

Rachel King competed in the 1,500m races Friday evening. Burdick was just 0.44 seconds from his season-best mark and 3.70 seconds from his PR, which is third on the school's top 10. With Burdick's first-place finish, he's tallied four career wins in the 1,500m.

Kip Janvrin Open - Friday
As the team competed one day at the Kip Janvrin Open, they made the most of it, recording five personal-best marks throughout the afternoon.

Emma Nelson recorded their personal-best marks. Schell beat her 2017 Kip Janvrin mark by 20.48 seconds to record the PR while Nelson posted her second attempt in the outdoor 5,000m, which beats her previous-best by 3.91 seconds.

The men's 200m was a tight race with senior
Jalen Williams sneaking ahead of junior
Skyler Monaghan by 0.001 seconds. Williams recorded his season-best mark, beating his previous-best by 0.25 seconds and Monaghan recorded his PR by 0.09 seconds.

Jennifer Thill notched a personal best, her third time resetting her PR mark, beating it by 0.02 seconds.

Michael Schwinghamer notched a career-best mark in the 3,000m steeplechase, beating his previous-best by 1.92 seconds and recording his best place finish in the event (third).

In Moorhead, Minn. on Saturday, some Jackrabbit competed in the throwing events. Unattached thrower,
