CHENEY, Wash. – The Jackrabbit women's soccer program played to a scoreless draw at Eastern Washington Sunday, wrapping up its weekend unbeaten with a pair of shutout performances.
Â
South Dakota State is now 5-4-1 on the season after the double-overtime contest.
Â
Maggie Smither logged 110 minutes between the pipes with seven saves, earning her fifth shutout of the 2018 campaign.
Â
SDSU finished the match with 13 shots (five on goal) as a team, as
Marisa Schulz,
Karlee Manding,
Annie Williams,
Sunniva Dunagan,
Allie Zueger and
Abigail Kastens all had two attempts on the day.
Â
"We faced a really good team today," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "They've been in the last two NCAA Tournaments and I'm proud of how our team got stronger as the game went on.
Â
"Our midfield was great for most of the match, and both Darien (Poelstra) and Karlee (Manding) created some great chances in the second half and overtime."
Â
The Jackrabbits faced pressure throughout in a back-and-forth affair, but held strong on the defensive end as
Alexa Hepner,
Kaitlin Zabel and Williams all played 110 minutes as part of the stout back line that worked around 17 Eastern Washington shots.
Â
Scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation, State took control in overtime and nearly broke through in the 107th as
Darien Poelstra's shot hit the crossbar and ricocheted back to Manding, but an EWU defender stepped in front to block the potential game-winner (and the final scoring chance of the day) as the time ran out on both teams.
