Tough Tests
South Dakota State played five Power Five (ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12) opponents a year ago (in addition to a matchup at then-No. 6 Wichita State of the American Athletic Conference).
Â
Although the team does not have any power five opponents on this year's schedule, the Jacks played at Memphis (AAC) and then-No. 7 Nevada (Mountain West) in the nonconference season.
Â
South Dakota State has seven wins over Power Five programs since joining The Summit League in 2007, picking up victories over Iowa State (2008), Iowa (2010 and 2017), Washington (2011), TCU (2015), Minnesota (2015) and Ole Miss (2017).
Â
SDSU's wins over Iowa and Ole Miss in 2017-18 came in the shortest time frame of any Summit League team since 1998 (seven days). The Jackrabbits are the fifth league team to post a win over separate Power Five conferences in the same regular season, and the first to do it since 2009.
Â
In 10 games against power five opponents for his career,
Mike Daum is averaging 18.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 44.2 percent from deep. He has two double-doubles in those matchups.
Â
Preseason All-Conference; Jacks Picked First
Mike Daum and
David Jenkins headlined the Summit League's preseason teams, announced early-October. Jenkins is a first-time preseason honoree while Daum earned his third-consecutive Preseason Player of the Year nod.
Â
Daum is the second Jackrabbit to be named Preseason All-Conference and the first to do it more than once, joining Nate Wolters (2012-13).
Â
As a team, South Dakota State was picked to win the league for the fifth time in program history, garnering 34 of 36 first-place votes.
Â
SDSU Last Time Out (Jan. 24)
South Dakota State men's basketball started fast and never looked back in an 87-69 victory Thursday night over North Dakota State.
Â
Playing in front of 2,578 fans at Frost Arena, the Jackrabbits improved to 16-6 on the season and 6-1 in Summit League play while shooting 54 percent and dishing 20 assists as a team.
Â
SDSU buried 11 3-pointers in the contest, including a 7-of-11 start from deep in the opening half.
Â
"I thought there was great energy in the building tonight," head coach
T.J. Otzelberger said. "We are really fortunate to have such great fans that came out and I thought that led to us having energy from the start. I was really happy with our guys after the lay-off, not having a game in eight days and to come out with great energy. So credit the crowd, credit our guys with the energy because I thought that set the tone for the night and put us in position to win the game."
Â
Mike Daum led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting, adding 17 rebounds for his 45th career double-double.
Â
David Jenkins scored 25 with four 3-pointers and had three steals.
Skyler Flatten had 16 points, tallying 11 in the final frame.
Â
Tevin King dished a team-high seven assists alongside eight points, while
Alex Arians finished with six assists and matched Jenkins for a team lead in steals (three).
Â
South Dakota State opened the game on a tear, building a 16-3 lead in the first five minutes thanks to a 14-0 run early. NDSU crawled back within single-digits briefly, but a trio of Jenkins 3-pointers on three-consecutive possessions put the Jacks back up 15 (28-13) with 9:30 on the clock.
Â
Ahead 33-15 later in the half, the Jackrabbits saw the Bison roll off eight unanswered to threaten the double-figure advantage, but SDSU regained the momentum before the under-four mark and rolled to a 44-25 lead at the break.
Â
SDSU pushed its lead to 24 (49-25) in the opening minute of the second half behind five-consecutive from Daum, though NDSU answered with a 5-0 burst of its own soon after. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way, with the Jackrabbits riding out the clock thanks to the comfortable lead.

Opponent Last Time Out (Jan. 24)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Omaha men's basketball team erased a 17-point second-half deficit Thursday night, rallying for an 85-79 overtime win in a barn burner with Purdue Fort Wayne at Gates Sports Center. With their fifth straight win, the Mavericks remain in a tie for first in the Summit League standings with a record of 12-8 (6-1), while the Mastodons drop to 12-10 (4-3).
Â
Senior captains Zach Jackson and Mitch Hahn combined for 48 points, with 24 of Jackson's coming in the second half and overtime period. He finished with 25 for the night with six rebounds while hitting 8-of-9 at the line. Hahn put up his third double-double of the year on a season-high 23 points and a career-best 15 rebounds, shooting 9-of-16 with four 3-pointers.
Â
JT Gibson also finished in double figures with 11 points -- all after halftime -- alongside three rebounds, an assist and two steals.
Â
The Mastodons got a team-leading 16 points with five rebounds from Kason Harrell. John Konchar, whose performance gave him Purdue Fort Wayne's all-time scoring record, finished with 15 points, four boards, nine assists and a block. Matt Holba added 10 points, and Dylan Carl had eight points with 10 rebounds.
Â
Omaha outshot the Mastodons .465 (33-of-71) to .420 (29-of-69) from the field and outrebounded an opponent for the fifth straight game, 43-37.
Â
Hahn delivered a strong opening half with 15 points and seven caroms before the break.
Â
PFW opened 1-of-7 to start as Omaha took the lead right out of the gate, but the Mastodons managed to pull even three times up to 12-12. PFW went up from there and surged to a 28-16 lead with 2:19 to go on the back of a 16-4 run.
Â
Omaha however, ended the half on a 7-0 run thanks to back-to-back threes from Hahn, which cut PFW's advantage to 28-23.
Â
After the intermission, Omaha extended the run to 11-0 to pull within one at 28-27. But PFW responded with a 21-5 spurt over the next seven minutes, which gave the Mastodons their largest lead of the night at 49-32.
Â
Down but never out, the Mavericks rallied from there when a Wanjang Tut layup at 12:17 started the comeback. By 9:32, the Mavericks had made it a two-point game at 51-49 with a 17-2 run, aided by eight points from Jackson.
Â
The game finally locked at 57-57 on a Jackson bucket with 4:47 to play. It stalled again at 59-59 and 61-61, and Omaha regained footing at 65-62 after a jumper and two free throws from Jackson. PFW's final three of regulation -- by Kason Harrell with 29 seconds left -- sent the game to overtime at 65-65.
Â
Gibson, after missing his first six 3-point attempts, finally drained one to put Omaha in the lead, 73-72, in overtime. Omaha took the lead twice more and PFW answered each time before a Gibson layup and two Jackson free throws put the Mavericks back in the lead, 81-79. The Mastodons committed two turnovers and missed their final two shot attempts in the final minute, while Omaha hit four of its final six free throws to seal the game.
