FORT DODGE, Iowa - The South Dakota State men's swimming team topped Midland University 152-53 and Olivet Nazarene University 148-57, while falling to Iowa Central CC 108-97 at the ICCC Quad-Dual Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits ended the day with 25 top-five finishing times over the 13 event quad-dual, highlighted with a win in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:12.81 (
Cody Watkins,
Alex Kraft,
Will Bierschbach,
Henry Skinner).
Senior
Mac Johnson swam in nearly mid-season form in the 50 free, placing second with a time of 21.14 which ranks sixth on SDSU's top-10 rankings. Skinner also swam in the event, placing fifth in 21.94.
In the 100 free, Bierschbach finished third in 49.34. Freshman
Reece Stikeleather placed second in the 200 free (1:46.46) while Kraft placed third (1:49.24) and fellow freshman
Caleb Harthoorn finished fifth (1:51.69).
A freshman standout in the backstroke last season,
Josh Wuflestad finished second in the 200 back in this year's opening meet with a time of 1:55.89.
Austin Pham, who missed most of last season due to injury, placed fifth in the event (2:00.86).
New faces made a splash in the 200 breast with sophomore transfer
Quenton Steffen finishing second (2:13.16) and freshman
Gavin Wheeler finishing fourth (2:15.87).
The Jacks dominated the 200 fly, with four of the top-five finishers dawning the yellow and blue. Watkins led the way by placing second in 2:00.32, followed by
Jon Gouger in third (2:02.95),
Max White in fourth (2:03.68) and
Naested Smit in fifth (2:05.84).
Distance Events
Jared Miller paced the Jackrabbits in both the 500 free, finishing second in 4:51.08, and the 1,000 free, in which he came in third (10:14.16). Stikeleather finished third in the 500 free with a time of 4:55.36 to follow up Miller and
Parker R. Brown did the same in the 1,000 free, finishing sixth in 10:28.95.
In the 400 IM, Pham placed fourth with a time of 4:22.31 with Wheeler right behind in fifth (4:23.50).
Relays
The Jacks 'A' team finished second in the 400 medley relay in 3:33.55 to open the meet (Wuflestad, Steffen, Watkins, Kraft) before closing the quad-dual with a win in the 400 free relay.

The next competition for both the men and women will be Nov. 1-2 at the South Dakota Quad-Duals in Sioux Falls with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day.
