VERMILLION — Colt Frein won his second event title of the weekend with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke and fellow freshman Colby Williams moved into the South Dakota State career top 10 in the 100 individual medley Saturday to highlight the final day of competition for the Jackrabbit men's swimming and diving team at the Coyote Invitational.
After winning the 200 individual medley on Friday, Frein returned to the top of the podium in Saturday's evening session by clocking a winning time of 2 minutes, 6.38 seconds in the 200 breaststroke as SDSU swimmers took six of the top seven spots in the event. Josh Nelson placed second in 2:07.37, followed by Bryan Wong in 2:03.13. Luke Watkins (2:09.71), Owen Byrd (2:11.52) and Braxton McGrath (2:12.10) claimed spots five through seven, respectively.
Frein also was the Jackrabbits' top finisher in the 100 backstroke with a sixth-place time of 52.44 seconds during the morning session to go along with an eighth-place showing in the 100 butterfly, :51.91 seconds.
Another SDSU newcomer, Evan Scott, turned in a runner-up placing in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:51.09. Cody Vertin finished fifth in 1:56.82 after another fifth-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:42.56) earlier in the day.
Bryce Edens contributed a runner-up effort for the Jackrabbit men with his time of 46.44 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
Williams, meanwhile, notched the ninth-fastest time in program history in the 100 IM with a seventh-place time of 52.73 seconds. He added a third-place finish in the 100 butterfly, :51.08 seconds.
Also contributing third-place individual finishes were Zavier Kranz in the 400 individual medley (4:20.85) and Byrd in the 1,650 freestyle (16:36.37).
Kolden Kringen posted three top-seven individual finishes on the day, placing fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:41.40), sixth in the 100 freestyle (:47.86) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (:51.87).
To close out the meet, SDSU fielded three of the top five teams in the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Nik Keuser, David Bosch, Hayden Tellier and Kranz swam to a runner-up finish with a time of 3:04.00, while the foursome of Jack Ellison, McGrath, Edens and Eric Anderson combined for a fourth-place time of 3:04.74. The all-freshman squad of Frein, Caleb Steward, Schemel and Williams finished fifth in 3:06.52.
