MACOMB, Ill. – The South Dakota State women's volleyball team fell to Western Illinois in straight sets (21-25, 20-25, 23-25) on Sunday.

The Jackrabbits fell to 5-17 overall with a 2-8 mark in Summit League matches. Western Illinois improved to 6-17, 3-7 Summit League.

Ashlynn Smith,
Crystal Burk and
Tori Thompson each recorded seven kills for the Jacks.
Makenzie Hennen added five kills and a team-leading 16 digs.
Carly Wedel and
Madison Fay aided the offense with 16 and 10 assists, respectively.
Tatum Pickar registered 13 digs on the match. Thompson had a team-best five blocks, while Burk added 3 blocks and 10 digs to the defensive efforts.

The Jacks trailed 9-8 early in the opening set but kills from Thompson and Hennen along with a pair of Leatherneck errors gave State a 12-9 advantage. WIU came back to take a 21-17 advantage. The Jacks went on a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 22-21, but it wasn't enough as the Leathernecks scored the final three points of the match to win the opening set, 25-21.

Western Illinois got out to an early 4-0 lead, but a 5-1 run by SDSU tied the second set at 5-all. The score was tied once again at 7-7, but after that the Leathernecks dominated play en route to a 25-20 second set win.

Kills by Smith, Thompson and
Abbey Fryauf in addition to a trio of Jackrabbit blocks set SDSU ahead 7-3 in the third set. The Jacks built their lead to 10-6, but the Leathernecks recorded 10 unanswered points to take a 10-16 advantage. State fought its way back to only trail, 23-24, but a WIU kill completed the sweep, taking the third set, 25-23.
