Punt returner Jaxon Janke and defensive end Quinton Hicks were named Tuesday to the HERO Sports FCS All-Freshman Team.
Â
A redshirt freshman from Madison, Janke was a first-team selection after ranking among the top 15 in the Football Championship Subdivision with an average of 10.7 yards per return, highlighted by a 77-yard return for touchdown Sept. 7 against Long Island.
Â
Janke also saw extensive action at wide receiver, catching 29 passes for 353 yards — totals that both ranked third on the team. His four touchdown receptions ranked second on the squad.
Â
Hicks, who earned honorable mention recognition, played in the Jackrabbits' final 12 games as a true freshman and ranked third on the team with five sacks. The Wichita, Kansas, native tallied 17 total tackles and also forced and recovered a fumble.
Â
South Dakota State made its eighth consecutive appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs during the 2019 season. The Jackrabbits finished with an 8-5 overall record, including a 5-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
