PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Northeastern put together three big innings in the mid and late innings to defeat South Dakota State, 13-7, in a back-and-forth game Sunday that was the finale for both teams at the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
The Huskies improved to 4-2 overall with their third consecutive win. SDSU dropped to 1-3 at the Snowbird Baseball Classic and 3-4 overall.
SDSU tallied the first runs of the game in the third inning on a two-run single by
Josh Falk that plated both
Gus Steiger and
Braeden Brown, who both walked.
Northeastern answered with a run in the home half of the third inning before taking a 5-2 lead with a four-run fifth inning that was aided by three Jackrabbit errors.
Falk delivered his third run batted in of the game with a single in the seventh that brought the Jackrabbits to within 5-3.
However, Northeastern responded with a three-run bottom of the seventh, which was highlighted by Corey DiLoreto's RBI double.
The Jackrabbits made it a one-run game in their half of the eighth, scoring four times. Steiger plated the first two runs with a single, while Brown drove in another with a base hit.
Luke Ira also scored on a passed ball.
Once again, Northeastern had an answer as they hung a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the eighth. DiLoreto delivered the big blow with a two-run triple to the right-center gap.
Jake Farrell recorded three of Northeastern's 13 hits. Falk and
Drew Beazley were each 2-for-5 to pace SDSU's 10-hit effort.
David Stiehl, who allowed only one run over three innings of relief, picked up the win for the Huskies. Freshman
Nic McCay took the loss for SDSU after striking out three, walking three and allowing four runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings.
UP NEXT
The Jackrabbits open a four-game slate of games in Conway, Arkansas, next weekend by meeting host Central Arkansas in a 3 p.m. game Friday afternoon.
