Taryn Christion and Christian Rozeboom were each honored for the third time with most valuable player awards at the South Dakota State University football team's annual banquet over the weekend.
A quarterback from Sioux Falls, Christion was selected as the recipient of the Jim Langer Award as team MVP for the third consecutive season. During his senior campaign, Christion threw for 3,020 yards and 32 touchdowns while setting SDSU and Missouri Valley Football Conference career records for passing yards (11,535), passing touchdowns (104) and total offense (13,050 yards). He also was selected as a finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision for the third year in a row.
Rozeboom, a linebacker from Sioux Center, Iowa, posted his third consecutive 100-tackle season with a team-best 105 stops in 2018 en route to again receiving the Doug Miller Award as the team's defensive MVP. Rozeboom registered double digits in tackles five times and also contributed two interceptions, a pair of forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Earning the Adam Timmerman Award as offensive team MVP was wide receiver Cade Johnson. As a sophomore in 2018, Johnson set a Jackrabbit single-season record with 17 touchdown receptions. He finished the year with 67 total receptions for 1,332 yards, topping the 100-yard mark in a game six times. Johnson also tied an SDSU single-game record with four touchdown receptions in the season opener against Montana State.
The Adam Vinatieri Award for special teams MVP was presented to punter Brady Hale. The Yankton native closed out his collegiate career by averaging 42.5 yards per attempt on 57 punts, landing 24 inside the opponents' 20-yard line. Hale also served as the team's holder on placekicks.
Fellow senior Dalton Cox was selected by his teammates and coaches as the recipient of three different awards, including repeating as the Josh Ranek Effort Award honoree. An Aberdeen native, Cox also was tabbed as the recipient of the Winston Wright Servant/Humility Award for his community service efforts and was named the winner of the Scholar-Athlete Award after compiling a perfect 4.0 grade-point average throughout his collegiate career.
Scout team player of the year honors were presented to Ryan Van Marel (defense), Michael Morgan (offense) and Michael Griffin (special teams) for their efforts on the practice field.
South Dakota State finished the 2018 season with a 10-3 overall record and made their second consecutive appearance in the FCS playoff semifinals. The Jackrabbits are currently in the midst of spring practices and will host their annual spring game April 13.
