Peter Bates ended the first day of his decathlon with his personal-best score after five events, claiming three individual personal-best marks.Â
Bates finished off the first day of the decathlon with three personal-best marks en route to his first-day personal-best score by 46 points. Bates, who last competed in a decathlon in 2017 outdoors, was close to a PR in his first event of the day, missing his 100m best by 0.05 seconds.
However, the Waverly, Iowa native tallied a 2-03.50-foot personal-best in the shot put (short of overall PR by 5.25 inches) and added 0.25 inches to his high jump best before cutting 0.90 seconds off his 400m best.

He is sitting in his best place-finish of the day, 12th overall out of group one, while adding his first outdoor marks in all the events since the end of the 2017 season.

Evan Hieber is 10th overall after the first day of competition in group two of the decathlon. Being in 12th place after two events (100m and long jump), the Sioux Fall local captured a fifth-place finish in the shot put to get within 325 points behind the leader at seventh place through three events.
Then he came back with a tied personal-best mark in the high jump that resulted in a tied runner-up finish to push him to fifth overall through four events.

He closed with a 13th-place finish in the 400m to end day one 521 points behind the leader.

Thursday -Â Hieber and Bates will finish their decathlon, while field events will kick off the morning at Long Beach in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. SDSU track events at Long Beach will open in the afternoon starting at 3:30 p.m. CT. and run through 7:20 p.m. CT. Several Jackrabbits will compete in 5,000m (heats yet to be determined) in the Bryan Clay during the evening.
Friday -Â SDSU will comeback to the Bryan Clay and open with track events at 11:40 a.m. and field events as early as 11 a.m. CT (flights still being determined, men's long jump starts at 11 a.m. CT). Track events that are shorter than 1,500m will be seeded 20 minutes prior to the race (no heat sheets readily available). Running events 1,500m and longer will be seeded by Wednesday night (field events should be as well).Â
While the Bryan Clay Invitational is occurring in California, Jackrabbits will also compete at the Red Raider Open on Friday, leading off with field events at 3:30 p.m. CT and track events 7 p.m. CT.
There will also be SDSU student-athletes at the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge on the track, starting at 12:30 p.m. on a rolling schedule (event schedule does not list approximate starting times for events). Unattached freshmanÂ
Daniel Burkhalter is penciled to comepete in the Blue Hawk Games, hosted by Dickinson State, on Friday as well (times still awaiting to be established).
Saturday -Â The Red Raider Open will be under full swing and Jacks in California should be finished. Field events begin at 11 a.m. CT while track events begin at 1 p.m. CT.
JACKRABBIT EVENT SCHEDULEÂ -Â This is an event schedule to follow with all Jackrabbit-related events sorted on a timeline. All times are tentatively scheduled. For the track events 800m and under, the heats will be live-seeded about 20 minutes prior to the event. As a result, the starting event times are listed rather than the exact heat time.Â
