Doug Wilson is a two-time NJCAA All-American and the 2018-19 NJCAA Player of the Year, helping his team to this year's national championship. Wilson averaged 21 points and 8.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Kirkwood Community College, shooting 67 percent from the field with 11 double-doubles.Â
SDSU: What have the last two years been like at Kirkwood?
Doug Wilson: The last two years have been amazing. Coming here was one of the biggest decisions I've made and it turned out great in the long run. The coaching staff made me feel at home on my visit, and the community was just full of energy.
SDSU: You were recently named as the NJCAA Player of the Year. What was that like getting the news?
DW: It was an unbelievable feeling to get that news. It showed that hard work was paying off, and I'm just very thankful for the recognition. It's definitely a team award though, because we had so much success this year and those teammates played a huge role.
SDSU: You also just won the NJCAA's National Title, right?
DW: That was a great team run and a fun way to end my time with them. I left in the best way possible. It was fun all year, and I wish it never ended.
SDSU: So now that you're set to join the Jackrabbits, what brought you to, or helped you choose South Dakota State?
DW: The people and the community on the visit; everyone was tuned in to SDSU. My future teammates were fun to be around and they made me feel like that was the right place, and that we could do some special things. The coaching staff did a great job making me feel comfortable and I could just tell they really cared. This place also has a lot of history, and I'm excited to be a part of that.
SDSU: So what are your summer plans?
DW: I plan to finish up here (Kirkwood CC) and get to campus for the summer session so I can start workouts and meet my teammates.
SDSU: You've mentioned your future teammates a couple times now. What has it been like building the relationships with those guys?
DW: I've been talking to them every now and them, and can't wait to get together and start winning. We want to win from day one and go for it.
SDSU: There are going to be a lot of new faces at for South Dakota State next year, yours included. What are Jackrabbit fans going to see when you're on the court?
DW: I'll be giving all of my effort, all of the time on both ends of the floor. I'm excited to do my best, play my game as a rebounder and finisher at the rim with a lot of energy.
