Owen Colburn is a two-time Class 3A All-State, three-time 3A IBCA All-Sub State and four-time all-conference performer from Spirit Lake, Iowa. He averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds in 15 games as a senior, and in his junior campaign put up over 20 points and 11 boards per contest.
Â
SDSU: What are you looking forward to in your final month in Spirit Lake, Iowa?
Coburn: I'm really looking forward to enjoying the things I only get to do once: going to prom, hanging with high school friends and just enjoying this part of my life. I'm also spending a lot of time with family and making sure they know how thankful I am for them.
Â
SDSU: What do your summer plans look like?
Coburn: I've been looking forward to playing at the highest level my entire life, so I'm really excited to get up there and get after it. We get to campus around May 28, so it will be great to spend time with teammates, start the individual and team workouts, and get going with lifting, shooting and classes.
Â
SDSU: So why did you decided to come to SDSU?
Coburn: The easy answer is probably the people and the coaching staff. There were some other schools looking at me, but South Dakota State stood out because the coaches really got to know me and my family. We had a team camp up there last summer and I was able to go and talk with the coaching staff when we weren't training. After that meeting, I was walking out with my dad and told him, "I want to go here."
Â
SDSU: We've talked with a few of the newcomers already, but what really excites you about joining this Jackrabbit team?
Coburn: There are so many things. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play with some great basketball players. I've been able to get know most of the guys already, so it's going to be a fun time. Coach Hendo (Henderson) always says that we need to get ready to battle every day, and I know it will be a great four or five years doing that with this group.
Â
I'm also looking forward to being a part of Jackrabbit nation, because the fan base in Brookings is extraordinary, and it's amazing how the community supports everyone on and off the floor.
Â
SDSU: We've asked this question to all of our signees, but what will fans see from you in a Jackrabbit uniform?
Coburn: It's my goal to be a team-first guy, all the way, and to do whatever we need me to do. When you're on the court you'll have four other guys with you, so I just want to support them, bring a great attitude and do whatever we need to win.
Â
SDSU: How about off the court? What type of person will you be away from basketball?
Coburn: I'm definitely a social person, and enjoy meeting new people. I hope to impact the community in a positive way and teach younger kids the game of basketball. It was always the coolest thing when a college kid would spend time with me on the court, so I'm looking forward to giving some of that back.
Â
SDSU: Do you have any previous experience doing that?
Coburn: Our coach set up a youth basketball camp on Saturday mornings when I was in high school; a five- or six-week thing called Little Tribe. We'd have first through fifth graders come into the gym, do drills and play knockout. It just was a way to give back to the community. I went to those camps when I was younger, and always thought it was so cool, so again, I just want to do that for the local families as a thank you for all they do for us.
Â
Coburn is part of a recruiting class that includes NJCAA Player of the Year Doug Wilson, NJCAA All-American Tray Buchanan and all-state high school performers Baylor Scheierman (Nebraska) and Noah Freidel (South Dakota).
