Â
SDSU: You're coming up on the final few weeks over you high school career, so how has your senior year been?
Baylor Scheierman: It's been really good, and it seems like it's gone by pretty fast. I haven't had a lot of downtime between football, basketball and golf, but have really enjoyed my last year with friends, and we've been pretty successful as well.
Â
SDSU: You did have a lot of success this season between winning the football title and reaching the Nebraska Class B State Tournament semifinals. What do you think led to that success in your final year at Aurora?Â
Scheierman: I think it really started in the summer for us, where a core group of our guys got after it in the weight room. We put a lot of extra time in to improve as a team, and that really helped out our chemistry, which pushed us to be better on the field and the court.
Â
SDSU: You mentioned that you're playing golf this spring. How has that been?
Scheierman: It's been going really well, and I just made our varsity team this month. It gives me a break from basketball, and I really enjoy it. It's also only my second year, so I'm still learning it but having fun.
Â
SDSU: What are some of the other things you like to do away from basketball?
Scheierman: I like to hang out with friends, and it seems like we're always pretty active. We'll play tennis, street basketball or go to the gym.
Â
SDSU: What was your recruiting process like, and why did you choose South Dakota State?
Scheierman: South Dakota State was my first offer, and what really sold me was that every time I talked to or met with Coach Henderson, he put a smile on my face. He brings so much energy and just makes things fun, even when they aren't. Beyond that, it honestly came down to the family atmosphere around the program and all of the support they have from fans.
Â
SDSU: You eluded to the fans, and we certainly have some great support. What are those fans going to be seeing from you over the next 4-5 years?
Scheierman: On the court, you're going to see a guy who competes hard on both ends and has a lot of passion for the game. I also think I have a flair that a lot of people don't, in that I like to get my teammates involved and would rather have a cool assist than get a lot of points. If I need to score though, I can put the ball in the hole. I really like getting to know people and making new friendships, as well, so off the court you're going to see a very social guy who likes talking to people.
Â
Scheierman is part of a recruiting class that includes NJCAA Player of the Year Doug Wilson, NJCAA All-American Tray Buchanan and all-state high school performers Owen Coburn (Iowa) and Noah Freidel (South Dakota).
