SIOUX FALLS — South Dakota State University sophomores Derek Hackman and Gus Steiger were named Wednesday to the 2019 Baseball Academic All-Summit League Team. Selections of the 10-member squad were determined by a vote among the league's sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives.

Hackman, a native of Johnston, Iowa, has posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in computer science. He was the Jackrabbits' regular starter at catcher during the recently completed 2019 season, finishing the year with a .237 batting average, two home runs and 16 runs batted in.

A native of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Steiger has compiled a 3.39 GPA as an exercise science major. He has been an all-Summit League performer each of his first two seasons, including receiving first-team recognition as a shortstop in 2019. Steiger shared the team lead with a .324 batting average, hit five home runs and also led the squad with 43 RBIs, 13 doubles and 18 stolen bases.

To be eligible for the academic team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3, completed at least one full academic year at the current institution (freshmen are not eligible) and participated in 50 percent of his team's competitions (20 percent for pitchers).
