OMAHA, Neb. -- South Dakota State and Creighton faced off in a high-energy, physical contest Thursday evening at Morrison Stadium, where a second half score sunk the Jackrabbits in a 1-0 affair.
South Dakota State (2-1) had seven shots in the game, putting four on goal. Maggie Smither came through with nine saves in the loss, facing off against a Creighton (2-0) squad that fired 27 total shots.
Leah Manuleleua and
Maya Hansen led the Jackrabbits with two efforts each, while Smither,
Darien Poelstra and
Adalaide Kline each had a shot.
The Jackrabbits withstood pressure early, dealing with 10 Bluejay attacks in the opening frame but holding firm on the defensive end. Smither recorded three saves in the first half, and Gabby Vivier-Hannay assisted in the scoreless half by stepping in front of a ball that looked destined for the net in the 17th minute.
SDSU took three shots in the first half, including a near-miss from Manuleleua late in the half that was tipped over the crossbar at the last moment.
The teams traded runs after the break, but SDSU was issued a red card in the 60th and forced to play with 10 the rest of the way. The short-handed Jacks hung with the home team initially, but a second-chance effort after a corner kick in the 74th put Creighton ahead, 1-0.
State nearly found an equalizer in the 81st as Hansen broke away from the Bluejays, but after her shot was initially knocked away by the keeper, the Jacks could not gather the rebound for a second chance score of their own.
The final three minutes of action provided plenty of action for fans in the stadium, as Smither put a shot on goal in the 88th and Hansen nearly tied it with less than 20 seconds on the clock on another breakaway. Overtime was not in the cards, however, as the Jacks suffered their first loss of the season.
