MANHATTAN, Kan. -- South Dakota State women's soccer dropped a 2-0 contest to Kansas State Sunday afternoon at Buser Family Park.
Maggie Smither started and played into the second half at goalie for the Jackrabbits (2-2), allowing two goals with seven saves before Taylor Lock entered between the pipes. Lock had three saves and did not allow a goal.
Leah Manuleleua led the Jacks' offense with three shots, putting one on goal. Stephanie Dashiell and Abigail Kastens had SDSU's other shots on goal, as seven Jackrabbits combined for nine shots.
"I thought we settled in pretty well in the first half but we can't lose focus at critical moments," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "As a coach, it's important that I have our team more prepared in those moments. I'm proud of a number of players that rose to the occasion. Now our focus needs to be using this weekend to grow."
The teams traded runs throughout the first half, but it was the Wildcats who broke through first with a goal in the 45th minute. With less than a minute to go in the opening frame, Kansas State capitalized when SDSU was unable to clear a cross into the box, finding the back of the net. The Jackrabbits nearly answered before the break, but a shot was stopped by the defense and SDSU went to the locker room down, 1-0.
South Dakota State continued to pressure in the opening minutes of the second half, but after starting to win back the possession battle and mount an offensive attack, the Jacks saw momentum swing back to the Wildcats with a goal in the 58th. Kansas State went up 2-0 when a shot from the far corner of the box caromed off the near post and into the score.
Play evened over the final 30-plus minutes of action, but the Jackrabbits could not spark a comeback on the offensive end and dropped their second-straight on the road.
