DES MOINES, Iowa -- South Dakota State women's soccer held a plus-10 advantage in shots Friday night, but fell 1-0 to Drake on the road at Cownie Soccer Complex.
The Jackrabbits slipped to 2-3 on the season despite leading the Bulldogs in shots, 17-7, and shots on goal, 7-4, as Leah Manuleleua paced both teams with five efforts. Marisa Schulz was close behind with four shots (including two on net), and Maya Hansen added three to round out the top Jacks' threats.
Maggie Smither tallied three saves in the defeat, and 20 South Dakota State student-athletes saw the field.
"We made progress in a lot of areas this game, but ultimately not defending a set piece did us in," head coach
Brock Thompson said. "The bigger picture is that we need to recognize that the moment the ball is lost is a crucial moment for us to give great physical and mental effort."
SDSU pressured early and often in the opening half, putting up seven shots in the first 45 minutes with three attacks on target. Drake, though, withstood the assault to sit tied with the Jacks at half, 0-0.
SDSU continued to hold a strong margin in possession early in the second, but it was the Bulldogs who found the net first, breaking through in the 60th minute. A free kick from midfield found the head of Hannah Bormann in the box, then bounced towards the far post to put Drake ahead, 1-0.
State picked up the pace after falling behind, but were unable to find the equalizer. One of those efforts came from Cecilia Limongi in the 70th, as the sophomore picked off a pass, carved her way through the defense and fired a shot on net.Â
The final five minutes saw Schulz and Manuleleua put up shots, but the Bulldog defense held tough and kept State off the board.
