The South Dakota State volleyball team was edged by Kansas City, 3-1 (25-14, 15-25, 16-25, 10-25) on Saturday as it hosted the Comfort Suites University Jackrabbit Invitational.

The Jackrabbits fell to 3-9 overall, while Kansas City improved to 4-6.

Makenzie Hennen and
Ashlynn Smith paced the Jacks with 14 kills each, while
Tori Thompson added five.
Carly Wedel aided the offense with 32 assists.
Tatum Pickar and
Crystal Burk both registered career-high dig totals with 20 and 19, respectively. Hennen notched her sixth double-double of the season as she added 13 digs.

South Dakota State held an early 10-8 lead to open the match as two kills from Smith and one from Burk increased the advantage to 13-8. An 11-3 run built the Jacks lead to 24-12 as a big swing by Hennen gave State a 25-14 first set victory. SDSU hit .275 in the first set compared to Kansas City at -.027.

The Roos held a 6-5 edge in the second set, when back-to-back kills by Wedel gave the Jackrabbits a 7-6 advantage. The teams traded points until UMKC held just a 13-12 lead, but the Roos score 12 of the final 14 points to take set two, 25-15.

In the third set, Kansas City jumped out to an 8-1 lead. Although the Jacks attempted to chip away at the deficit, the Roos held the lead for the entirety of the set to take a 2-1 advantage in the match with a 25-16 third set win.

The Jacks were trailing 14-6 in the fourth set when a 10-2 run put the Roos in position to capture the final set, 25-10.
