CLEVELAND — Three South Dakota State football newcomers have been named to the 2019 FCS Freshman All-America Team selected by Phil Steele Publications.

Leading the Jackrabbit contingent was first-team punt returner Jaxon Janke (pronounced YON-kee). A redshirt freshman from Madison, Janke averaged 10.7 yards per punt return during the 2019 season, highlighted by a 77-yard return for touchdown Sept. 7 versus Long Island.

Janke also saw extensive action at wide receiver, ranking third on the team with 29 receptions and 353 receiving yards. His four touchdown receptions ranked second on the squad.

Earning second-team honors was defensive end Quinton Hicks. The Wichita, Kansas, native emerged as a pass-rushing specialist and ranked third on the team with five sacks. He tallied 17 total tackles and also forced and recovered a fumble in 12 games.

Completing SDSU's list of honorees was third-team selection Diamond Evans at cornerback. The Chicago native played in 11 games, notching 20 tackles and an interception with four pass breakups. He started four contests.

South Dakota State made its eighth consecutive appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, finishing the 2019 season with an 8-5 overall record.
