Jackrabbits' Last Time Out
South Dakota State men's basketball shook off a cold start and rolled to a 21-point victory Wednesday evening at Frost Arena, topping North Dakota 87-66 in front of 2,271 fans.
Â
The Jackrabbits (14-7, 5-1 Summit League), shot 50 percent from the field (58 percent in the second half) and won their fifth straight game.
Â
Douglas Wilson led the Jacks with 22 points in 24 minutes of action, burying nine field goals with a 4-of-5 effort at the line.
Matt Mims scored a career-high 14 points off the bench, including 4-for-5 from 3-point range.
Â
Alou Dillon added a career-high as well, finishing with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, tallying all of his points in the second half.
Â
Noah Freidel added to the scoring with 16 points and recorded six rebounds, while
Baylor Scheierman pulled down seven rebounds and dished four assists.
Â
"I'm really proud of those two guys,
Matt Mims and
Alou Dillon, because of how those two young men stepped up in the second half," head coach
Eric Henderson said. "As far as our team, we got off to a little bit of a slow start but we were able to bounce back and hang in there before a nice little run helped separate us in the first half. I didn't love our efforts on the boards in the first half, but again we hung in there. I'm certainly proud of our bench tonight and it was a great team win for the Jackrabbits."
Â
A
David Wingett 3 gave State its first lead of the night (8-7) at 15:35, but the Jacks' cold start continued as SDSU hit just two of its first 15 shots and trailed, 13-8, nine minutes into the game. From that point on, however, SDSU rolled by sinking 10 of its next 11 from the field.
Â
A free throw from
Matt Dentlinger out of the under-12 reset stopped a nearly five-minute Jackrabbit scoring drought, and soon after a run of seven consecutive from Wilson tied the game at 18. That burst included the start of a larger 27-3 run that helped the Jacks break away. Overall, SDSU outscored the Fighting Hawks by 21 over the final 10:45 of the half to carry a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
Â
North Dakota came out of the break hot, putting together a run of eight unanswered to bring SDSU's lead to single digits before the under-16 media timeout. The Fighting Hawks came as close as six (56-50), but the Jacks ended any comeback hopes with a 9-0 run midway through the period, capping the scoring burst with a Freidel 3-pointer at 9:13.
Â
Leading 65-50 at that point, the Jackrabbits continued to push and took their largest lead of the night (87-64) on an
Aaron Fiegen free throw inside the final minute, using a strong effort from the bench to close out the win.
Â
Opponent Last Time Out
FARGO, N.D. -- The South Dakota Coyotes fought hard but ultimately fell to North Dakota State 72-70 inside the Scheels Center Wednesday night.
Â
NDSU's Tyson Ward took advantage of a defensive lapse off an inbounds play and scored a layup with less than two seconds left to seal the victory for the Bison. The possession before that, South Dakota guard Cody Kelley was called for a charge that gave the ball to the Bison.
Â
The Coyotes (11-8) fell to 2-3 in conference play while North Dakota State improves to 12-6 and 3-1 in the Summit League.
Â
Stanley Umude led the way for the Coyotes with 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocks while Tyler Hagedorn finished with 21 points, five shy of his 1,000th career point. Triston Simpson rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points on the night.
Â
As a team, the Coyotes shot 51 percent from the field (26-of-51) and 46 percent from deep (6-of-13).
Â
Ward finished with 14 points but none bigger than the two to win the game at the end. Vinnie Shahid led the Bison with 21 points and Tyree Eady finished with 18 points.
Â
As a team, the Bison shot 49 percent from the field (27-of-55) and 33 percent from deep (10-of-30).
Â
South Dakota jumped out to a quick start leading 10-3 after a jumper from Stanley Umude. The Coyotes extended their lead to 17-5 with 12:24 left in the first half. But with five minutes left in the half, the Bison went on a 17-1 run that gave them their first lead and a 41-34 advantage into the break.
Â
In the second half, the Coyotes started on a 7-2 run to cut the lead to 43-41 and later took their first lead of the second half at 50-49 after a Hagedorn layup. The Bison took a 66-61 advantage late in the second half, but a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer from Hagedorn tied things up at 68-all.
Â
Stanley Umude's driving bucket tied things up once again with under a minute left at 70-70. A great defensive possession later gave the Coyotes the ball with under 30 seconds left, but USD was unable to capitalize out of a timeout.
Â

Â
SDSU, now 23-7 overall with a 13-2 mark in Summit League action, shot 56.1 percent on the day with a 23-of-27 effort at the free throw line.
Â
The Jackrabbits saw USD shoot a red-hot 64.5 percent in the opening period, but limited the Coyotes to a 3-of-13 performance from beyond the arc in the second half to fuel the comeback.
"That was a tremendous college basketball game," head coach T.J. Otzelberger said. "We're thankful and grateful for our fans for the awesome environment and atmosphere. I'm proud of our guys for their resiliency. They've been in spots like that before, and they're winners and competitors. We were fortunate to come out with a win today."
Â
Back-and-forth early, the game saw 10 lead changes in the opening 10 minutes and sat even at 26 after a
Tevin King dunk forced a USD timeout at 9:57. The Coyotes built a double-digit lead (41-28) over the next four minutes, though, as the Jackrabbits worked through a shooting slump.
Â
USD pushed its lead to as high as 16 in the before half, but a quick 7-2 rally for the Jacks to end the opening frame sent the Jacks to the locker room down 11 (55-44) after a buzzer-beating 3 from Flatten.
Â
The Jackrabbits carried the momentum from Flatten's trey into the second period and stormed out of the break, drawing even with the Coyotes (63-63) with 13:37 to play behind a 12-2 rally. King scored 10 points during the stretch.
Â
South Dakota answered with a brief 7-0 run of its own, but the Jackrabbit attack preserved and soon had it tied once more at 72.
Â
The teams returned to trading buckets the rest of the way, with Daum's historic bucket putting State in front for good, 86-85, with 1:02 to play. The Jackrabbits held off the Coyotes with a clinical effort from the charity stripe inside the final minute, sinking all 10 free throw attempts to seal the victory.
