Jacks set personal bests at SDSU Div. II meet

BROOKINGS— The South Dakota State Jackrabbits track and field team returned to the SJAC for their first competition of the new decade wth the SDSU Div. II Invitational on Friday.Â
In total, 15 Jacks competed across eight events, grabbing two new personal records along the way.Â
Elise Emmick started things off for the Jacks, grabbing a ninth place finish in the women's 5000 with a time of 18:34.81. Freshman Kayla Christopherson picked up a
5:31.61 to claim sixth place in the women's mile, while classmate Janean Hanka took 10th in the women's mile with a time of 5:33.51.
The first personal best of the day came with Derek Boekelheide's 1:22.51 performance in the 600, topping his previous best of 1:23.20.
In the women's 600, Nichole Sample picked up a fourth place finish with a 1:39.75. In the 800, Jessica Christoffer claimed the Jacks' second new personal best mark of the day, turning in a 2:19.23 for second place, while Tori Glazier followed with a 2:19.23 to take fourth.Â
Oksana Covey went 57.76 to take third in the women's 400. In the men's 1000, unattached Jackrabbit Josh Becker finished in seventh place with a 2:33.99 mark and Blake Iverson turned in a time of 2:31.27, good enough for second place.

About Jim Emmerich
A 1940 South Dakota State graduate, Jim Emmerich was born March, 18 1911 in New Ulm, Minnesota. Emmerich started the cross country program at SDSU in 1947, and coached cross country and track and field at the university from 1946-60. During that time, his track and field teams won 10 North Central Conference titles. Emmerich's 1953 track squad won the NAIA National Championship, marking the first national title in any sport at South Dakota State. Six years later in 1959, his team would go on to win the NCAA College-Division title.
A nationally-known athletic trainer, Emmerich was a trainer for the U.S. team at the 1956 summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia and was head trainer for U.S. teams at the 1959 Pan Am Games in Chicago as well as at the 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo and also served as head trainer for the U.S. Hockey team. In 1963, he traveled with U.S. track teams for dual meets in Russia, Poland, West Germany and England. In 1967, was an administrative assistant for the U.S.'s Pan Am team in Winnipeg and in 1968 was appointed as an administrative official for the Olympics in Mexico City. As an athlete at SDSU, Emmerich was a Little All-American guard in football and helped SDSU to the 1939 North Central Conference title.Â
"Coach Emmerich certainly has a lasting impression not only in the sport track and field but in athletic training as well.," said DeHaven. "He took the program to incredible heights in the 1950s, and that legacy has carried on through the years."
As a part of Saturday's meet, Jackrabbit alumni will have the opportunity to participate in the Phil Lavellee Alumni Mile at 1:35 p.m. and an Alumni 4x300 meter relay at 2:50 p.m..
Participants in the Phil LaVallee Alumni mile are encouraged donate $20 to the Phil LaVallee/Prairie Striders Scholarship. A portion of the donations will also be sent to the Kip Kinsley Memorial Scholarship.Â
At 2:45, children can lace up for the 'Fastest Little Jackrabbit' event and test their endurance against SDSU'S mascot, Jack.Â
Also prior to the meet at 12:15, South Dakota State's conference champions will be honored during a ring ceremony.
