A South Dakota State Win Would ...
Make SDSU 20-8 on the year, 11-2 in Summit League play and 21-13 all-time against the Mastodons ... move the Jacks to 15-0 at home this season and extend their active home winning streak to 23 games ... give the Jacks a 1,555-1,048-1 program mark.
Â
A South Dakota State Loss Would ...
Drop the Jackrabbits to 19-9 on the year and 10-3 in Summit League play ... move SDSU to 20-14 all-time against Purdue Fort Wayne ... snap SDSU's 22-game home winning streak ... give the Jacks a 1,554-1,049-1 program mark.
Â
Trending Well in Conference Play
Though the Jackrabbits put together a successful nonconference season to start the 2020 season off on the right foot, SDSU's play has seen a noticeable uptick across several statistical areas during league play.
- After sinking just 103 3-pointers through 15 nonleague games (at a clip of 30.4 percent), the Jackrabbits are 94 of 222 from deep in 12 league games with a long range shooting percentage of 42.3 percent. Additionally, five players have double-digit 3s in that span.
- SDSU has been more selective of shots in league play, leading to an increase of more than seven points per game (74.3 to 81.8). With that, the Jacks are shooting 53.2 percent in league games compared to a .453 rate in the first 15 contests.
- In line with better shot selection, SDSU has seen an uptick in assists per game (13.5 to 15.2) and a decrease in turnovers per contest (14.1 to 12.0).
- After averaging 7.3 points per game in nonleague play, Noah Freidel and Alex Arians have posted scoring averages of 13.8 and 11.3, respectively, in the last 12 contests.

Tough Tests
South Dakota State played four Power Five (ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, PAC-12) opponents in the 2019-20 nonleague season, facing USC, Nebraska, Arizona and Indiana in November. Though the Jacks went winless in those games, they led for a majority of the contest at Arizona, and held Indiana (a top-10 scoring offense) to a season-low 64 points.
Â
South Dakota State has seven wins over Power Five programs since joining The Summit League in 2007, picking up victories over Iowa State (2008), Iowa (2010 and 2017), Washington (2011), TCU (2015), Minnesota (2015) and Ole Miss (2017).

Â
Jackrabbits' Last Time Out
South Dakota State men's basketball claimed a 90-78 win over Denver Friday at Frost Arena, using a strong second half to remain undefeated at home.
Â
The Jackrabbits (19-8, 10-2 Summit League) shot 46 percent in the win and outscored the Pioneers in the paint, 48-32. SDSU trailed 26-14 in rebounds at the half, but flipped the script on Denver in the second half to sit in a 40-40 tie on the boards.
Â
Matt Dentlinger posted his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds, going 6-of-8 from the field with a pair of blocks.
Douglas Wilson poured in a team-best 23 points and sank 8-of-11 field goals. Wilson added three blocks and grabbed eight rebounds.
Â
Noah Freidel scored all 16 of his points in the second half, and finished just shy of a triple-double, adding seven rebounds and a team-high eight assists.
Â
"It's been a unique last couple of weeks for us, as we've had long stretches where we haven't played," head coach
Eric Henderson said. "In the first half, obviously we struggled a little bit but I think a lot had to do with just the flow. There were 25 fouls called in the half and we didn't have as much energy as Denver did. They outrebounded us by 12 in the first half and played a lot harder than us.
Â
"Give Denver a lot of credit. They continue to fight and Coach (Rodney) Billups has them ready to play every night. Our guys really responded in the second half. We ended up tying them on the glass and that was a big part of how we were able to come back and have a pretty good second half. "
Â
Wilson fueled a 7-0 Jackrabbit run that gave State separation early, but Denver rallied to tie it at nine near the 16-minute mark, setting the stage for a back-and-forth opening half that featured seven ties and three lead changes.
Â
A 10-0 Pioneer run gave Denver a 29-24 advantage with 6:16 left in the half, as State worked through nearly a six-minute stretch without a field goal. Freidel found
Matt Mims in transition for a 3-pointer at 3:48 though and Frost Arena came to life. The teams continued to trade buckets until the break, however, and the Jackrabbits trailed Denver at halftime, 39-36.
Â
Denver continued its hot shooting early in the second, opening up a 48-43 lead, but saw the Jacks respond with five quick points, tying it on a Freidel triple at 15:18. Though the Pioneers briefly regained a 59-57 advantage, 11 unanswered Jackrabbit points followed as State took control for good.
Â
The Jacks stretched their lead to a game-high 15 with 1:05 to play, outscoring Denver by 15 in the final 20 minutes to defend home court.
Â
Opponent Last Time Out
FARGO, N.D. – Three Mastodons finished in double-digits but the Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball team fell 80-70 at first place North Dakota State on Friday (Feb. 14) evening at the Scheels Center.
Â
In the box score, Jarred Godfrey led the 'Dons with 20 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Dylan Carl totaled 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting while adding eight rebounds. The 16 points for Carl is his second best scoring night of the season. Matt Holba totaled 13 points with four rebounds.
Â
The 'Dons out-shot NDSU 49.1 percent (28-of-57) to 40.0 percent (24-of-60). The 'Dons held a 46-26 points in the paint edge. The difference came at the 3-point and free throw lines. Â
Marcus DeBerry made a shot from just inside half court at the first half buzzer to put the 'Dons down 43-33 at the break. The Mastodons then opened the second half on an 8-0 run. Purdue Fort Wayne would get within one point at 45-44 with 15:22 left in the game. Much of the early offensive push in the second half was due to Dylan Carl. The redshirt junior was 5-of-5 in the second for 11 points in the half.
Â
It was a 50-48 game after a Carl layup but then NDSU responded with 12 straight points to go up 14 with 11:15 left. The 'Dons did score the next six points to make it close once again but NDSU would pull away down the stretch.
Â
Tyson Ward led the Bison with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Vinnie Shahid pitched in 19.Â
Â
Last Matchup: SDSU at Purdue Fort Wayne (1/11/20)
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- South Dakota State held off a scrappy Purdue Fort Wayne squad Saturday night to secure its fourth-consecutive win, topping the Mastodons 70-61 at Memorial Coliseum.
Â
The Jackrabbits (13-7, 4-1 Summit League) led by as many as 21 after a hot-shooting opening frame, but saw the hometown 'Dons rally down the stretch to pressure State late.
Â
"I'm really proud of our young guys and how we handled our business on a long road trip," head coach
Eric Henderson said. "For us to come out the way we did in the first half, it was really impressive. We have multiple guys willing to step up and make plays and that was on display for us tonight."
Â
Down 45-24 with 16:25 left in the game, Purdue Fort Wayne woke up offensively, cutting it to single digits with 4:25 on the clock, then pulled within six inside the final two minutes.
David Wingett, however, put the game out of reach for good with 1:23 remaining, sinking a contested 3-pointer to cap a memorable night.
Â
Wingett blew past his previous career-high on his way to a 24-point showing, burying 9-of-15 from the field with six 3-pointers. 13 of those points came in the opening half as the Winnebago, Nebraska native helped the Jacks to their fast start.
Â
Matt Dentlinger and
Douglas Wilson were in double figures as well with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Dentlinger pulled down five rebounds and tallied two blocks.
Â
Noah Freidel (eight points) and
Alex Arians tied for the team-lead with eight rebounds, as Arians dished four assists on the night for a team that had 19 assists on 29 made field goals.
South Dakota State came out firing to build a 12-2 lead in the opening four minutes, then pushed its advantage to 14 (22-8) at 12:55 as Freidel buried a 3. The Jackrabbits, who shot 65 percent and went 5-of-8 from deep in the opening frame, continued to push and carried a 40-20 lead into halftime.
Â
Neither team found its rhythm early in the second, but with 16 minutes left the intensity picked up as the Mastodons made their charge. The double-digit lead proved vital for the Jackrabbits, though, as SDSU capped an undefeated week in Summit League action.
