Six games remain in South Dakota State's race to the Summit, and 10 games into the league season the Jackrabbits sit in a two-way tie for first place alongside North Dakota State. SDSU will play four of its final six games inside Frost Arena with a home court advantage that has seen the team win 95 percent of its games over the past nine years.
Â
The Jackrabbits secured a winning nonleague record for the third year in a row and went 7-1 in January, thanks in part to a plus-.500 field goal percentage in all 10 league contests thus far.

Â
Offensively, the Jackrabbits are shooting 48.8 percent from the field, 35 percent from deep and 70.2 percent from the line. The charity stripe has been an important factor in SDSU's success, as the Jacks are 14-1 in games where it shoots more free throws than its opponent.

Â
Noah Freidel broke into double figures this month and sits at 10.2 points per game. The Tea, South Dakota native has seven double-digit scoring games in league play, including three 20-plus efforts. He scored 28 with six 3-pointer at Omaha and broke the 20-point mark in both games against Oral Roberts (23 with four 3-pointers on Jan. 2, and 22 with four 3-pointers on Jan. 29). Â
A South Dakota State Win Would ...
Make SDSU 18-8 on the year, 9-2 in Summit League play and 59-35 all-time against the Mavericks ... move the Jacks to 13-0 at home this season and extend their active home winning streak to 21 games ... give the Jacks a 1,553-1,048-1 program mark.
Â
A South Dakota State Loss Would ...
Drop the Jackrabbits to 17-9 on the year and 8-3 in Summit League play ... move SDSU to 58-36 in the all-time series with Omaha and 0-3 in the last three matchups against the Mavs ... snap SDSU's 20-game home winning streak ... give the Jacks a 1,552-1,049-1 program mark.

Tough Tests
South Dakota State played four Power Five (ACC, SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, PAC-12) opponents in the 2019-20 nonleague season, facing USC, Nebraska, Arizona and Indiana in November. Jackrabbits' Last Time Out
MACOMB, Ill. -- South Dakota State men's basketball won its third consecutive game Saturday night, taking down Western Illinois on the road, 71-61.
Â
The Jackrabbits (17-8, 8-2 Summit League) saw the Leathernecks storm back from an 18-point halftime deficit to make it a one-possession game, but outscored WIU by nine from that point on to close out the win.
Â
"We certainly got a little stagnant in the second half, and I thought we got a little loose on the defensive end at times," head coach
Eric Henderson said. "When all is said and done, though, when you go on the road and win, you have to be proud. It wasn't always pretty, but our guys were able to get their momentum back and stretch it out from there."
Â
Douglas Wilson paced the Jackrabbit offense with 18 points, hitting 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 at the line.
Alex Arians and
Noah Freidel were in double figures as well with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Â
Arians hit 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and led the team with six rebounds. Five Jackrabbits - Freidel, Wilson,
Matt Dentlinger,
David Wingett and
Baylor Scheierman - had five rebounds apiece as SDSU claimed a plus-16 advantage on the boards.
Â
The Jackrabbits trail 8-5 four minutes into the action, but a Dentlinger layup out of the under-16 media break helped jumpstart SDSU's offense as the visitors went in front for good. Ahead 15-13 after a Wilson free throw at 11:02, the Jacks continued to push and soon stretched their lead to double figures (28-18) on a
David Wingett layup with 7:05 on the clock. That bucket came in the midst of a 15-0 Jackrabbit rally that helped State take a 38-18 lead on Freidel's triple at 4:05 in the first.
Â
Up 42-24 at the break, the Jackrabbits saw their double-digit lead come in handy as they held off a second-half Leatherneck charge.
Â
WIU crawled back to within 12 (42-30) two and a half minutes into the period, then made it a single-digit game (56-48) near the seven-minute mark. The Leathernecks kept pressing and drew within one (58-57) on a Ben Pyle triple at 3:07. That was as close as they would come, however, as SDSU recovered momentum with a Dentlinger 3-point play and closed the game on an 13-4 scoring spurt.
Â
Opponent Last Time Out

Â
NDSU shot 54.2% (26-of-48) to Omaha's 45.2% (28-of-62) and hit 11 threes for the night. The Bison also had a 36-25 rebounding advantage.
Â
Omaha committed a season-low six turnovers and outscored NDSU 18-8 off miscues.
Â
Omaha went without a turnover in the opening 20 minutes, and the half included six lead changes. Neither team could build to more than a four-point lead, and after a steal and a score by Ruffin at the buzzer, the game sat tied at 36-36 at halftime.
Â
The Bison scored 50 points in the second half – led by 16 from Shahid -- and used a 9-2 run to go up 52-42. The Mavericks pulled within three with the help of a 7-0 run on the back of Pile, which made it 57-54 with 11 minutes to play.
Â
NDSU rallied from there with three straight threes from Samuelson, Kreuser and Shahid. The Bison took their largest lead of 11 with less than two minutes left.
Â
Last Matchup: SDSU at Omaha (12/29/19)
OMAHA, Neb. -- South Dakota State men's basketball came out on the short end of a seesaw Summit League opener, falling 81-78 to Omaha Sunday in a contest that included 17 lead changes.
Â

Â
Matt Dentlinger tallied six boards and seven points in the post as one of four Jackrabbits to record a block.
Â
SDSU and Omaha traded buckets early with six lead changes through the opening 10 minutes. Freidel's 3-pointer near the 12-minute mark flipped the script to give State an 18-16 lead, and three minutes later Arians' wide-open 3-pointer forced a Maverick timeout at the close of a 7-0 run.
Â
The Jacks, who scorched the net at 63 percent in the opening frame, took a 29-21 lead on another Freidel trey at 5:52 and maintained control the rest of the half to carry a 42-36 lead into the locker room.
Â
Omaha came out firing in the second, cutting the lead to one (47-46) before the under-16 break and going in front 50-48 on a JT Gibson jumper moments later. Freidel stopped a 10-1 Maverick rally with a 3-pointer at 13:51, and the teams settled into back-and-forth play the rest of the way.
Â
Down 70-67 with under six to play,
Baylor Scheierman followed a Friedel dunk with a corner 3 as part of a five-point Jackrabbit spurt, but saw the Mavericks answer and go in front for good on a Matt Pile layup at 1:48.
Â
Arians' layup with 20 seconds left pulled the Jackrabbits within one (79-78), but after the Mavericks missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw, Omaha recovered with a block on the other end and sealed the victory with free throws at 1.9 seconds. SDSU looked to force overtime with a buzzer-beater, but the last-second shot fell off the rim.
