TULSA, Okla. – South Dakota State's Tanner Cook pinned both of his opponents Sunday to place third in the 165-pound division at the Big 12 Wrestling Championship contested at BOK Center.
A freshman from Ilion, New York, Cook needed only 63 seconds to pin Fresno State's Adam Kemp in his first match of the day.
In the third-place match, Cook trailed Iowa State's Chase Straw, 2-1, after one period and the two were tied at 5-all before Cook turned his second takedown of the second period into a pin with two seconds left on the clock. With his two wins and a third-place finish, Cook improved to 21-4 overall and became the fourth Jackrabbit wrestler to secure a berth in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships later this month in Minneapolis.
Of Cook's 21 victories this season, 14 have been by fall.
Three other Jackrabbit wrestlers competed in placing matches Sunday morning. Clay Carlson placed sixth at 141 pounds after dropping narrow decisions to Dusty Hone of Oklahoma State (4-2) and Michael Blockhus of Northern Iowa (6-5).
SDSU wrestlers split their seventh-place matches as Danny Vega posted a 12-4 major decision over Joey Thomas of West Virginia in the 125-pound weight class, while heavyweight Blake Wolters was pinned in his match by North Dakota State's Brandon Metz.
The Jackrabbits remain in fourth place in the team standings with 94 points. Defending champion Oklahoma State leads with 135.5 points, followed by Iowa State with 108.5 and Northern Iowa with 101.5. Both Oklahoma State and Iowa State have four finalists.
The tournament concludes with the championship session starting at 6 p.m. Sunday. Three SDSU wrestlers will compete in the finals: 149-pounder Henry Pohlmeyer, 184-pounder Zach Carlson and Tanner Sloan at 197 pounds. The championship bouts will be televised on FOX Sports regional networks.
