IOWA CITY, Iowa — The South Dakota State University men's cross country team placed eighth overall in a close race in the team standings at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday.

With 238 points, the Jackrabbits finished just two points behind Drake for seventh place and three points behind Eastern Illinois in sixth place. Oklahoma State and Iowa State claimed first and second place, respectively, to earn the automatic team qualifications to the NCAA Cross Country Championship races on Nov. 20 in Tallahassee, Florida.

The first SDSU runner to contribute to the score was Ben Olson, who led the team in the 10K race with a 37th-place finish in a time of 31 minutes, 22.13 seconds. Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo won the race at Ashton Cross Country Course in 30:17.81.

Also finishing in the top 50 were Joseph Minor-Williams, placing 41st with a time of 31:28.46, and Daniel Burkhalter, finishing in 31:32.64 for 44th.

Summit League champion Gabe Peters took 54th place in 31:39.94, Max Selbach finished in 62nd with a time of 31:48.90 and Mason McDonald crossed the line in 32:00.13 for 66th place. Rounding out the Jackrabbit finishers was Tom Breuckman, placing 70th in 32:02.14.

SDSU was the top placing team from the Summit League in the 28-team field.
