South Dakota State volleyball makes a trip north this weekend for matches at North Dakota State and North Dakota. The Jackrabbits are looking to clinch a spot in the Summit League postseason, needing just one more conference win to do so.Â
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
SDSU moved to 16-11 last week with a pair of three-set losses to Omaha and Denver at Frost Arena.
Crystal Burk tops the Summit League in kills per set, notching 3.80 on average. She has 12 double-doubles on the season and surpassed the 1,000 career kill mark against Denver last weekend. Burk is second on the squad in dig average with 2.54 per set. She trails only Tatum Pickar, who ranks sixth in the Summit with 4.04 digs per set.
Chloe Stitt also ranks on the Summit League kill chart. The senior sits eighth in the conference with 3.07 kills per set. Burk and Stitt have combined for 688 of the Jacks' 1,272 kills this season, more than 50 percent.
Freshman Ella Thompson leads State with 91 total blocks this year and .97 blocks per set. Sydney Andrews adds .74 blocks per set and Elyse Winter chips in .57 on average.
Carly Wedel averages 9.46 assists per set and Jasmine Weidemann adds 8.06. The duo has shared the setting duties in recent contests.
POSTSEASON PICTURE
SDSU needs just one more League win to guarantee a spot in the Summit League Postseason Tournament. The Jackrabbits are sixth in the standings at 8-8 and have two matches remaining. If the Jacks were to lose both remaining matches, they would still make the tournament if North Dakota State drops just one match. NDSU is seventh with a 6-10 record and two matches to play.
MILESTONE WATCH
Crystal Burk - 384 single-season kills (currently fourth all-time, 396 is fourth)
Crystal Burk - 1,080 single-season attacks (currently third all-time, 1,105 is second)
Crystal Burk - 889 career digs
LAST TIME OUT
South Dakota State volleyball fell in three sets to Denver Saturday afternoon in the team's final contest at Frost Arena this season (22-25, 22-25, 21-25).
The seniors led the way for the Jacks on Senior Day. Chloe Stitt paced all players with 15 kills, 12 of which came through the first two sets. Tatum Pickar tallied a team-high 12 digs to go with two service aces. Sydney Andrews and Hailee Blau recorded .364 and .333 hitting percentages, the highest of the Jacks' starting attackers. The duo had six kills apiece.
Crystal Burk notched her 1,000th career kill in the match. She needed just one heading into Saturday and surpassed the milestone on one of the first plays of set one. Burk ended the match with 12 kills. Jasmine Weidemann and Carly Wedel combined for 36 assists. Andrews, Burk and Ella Thompson had two blocks apiece.
Despite the sweep, the Jackrabbits maintained a tight score through all three sets with one of the Summit's top teams. Denver got out to a 9-4 lead in the opening set before three straight Jackrabbit points put the home team within two. Tatum Pickar tied the set at 12 with an ace. The sides went back-and-forth before Denver used a 7-2 stretch to lead 24-19. Two SDSU kills and a block brought State back within two before Denver finished off the set.
Set two saw 14 ties and six lead changes. The Jackrabbits scored three consecutive points twice, the largest run for either team in the set. SDSU held its final lead at 13-12 before Denver went back on top. The final set was another closely contested game. Denver used a pair of 4-0 stretches to lead 21-16 late. Stitt and Elyse Winter put down a kill apiece to pull SDSU back within three and the teams traded points until the end of the match.
