South Dakota State will open the third year of the
Eric Henderson era when it hosts Bradley Tuesday evening as part of a doubleheader inside Frost Arena. Tip is scheduled for 8:15 p.m.
The Jackrabbits enter the 2021-22 season after a 2020-21 campaign that saw them finish 16-7 (9-3 SUMMIT) and win their seventh regular season Summit League title in the last nine seasons.
NEWS & NOTES
- SDSU was picked to win the Summit League in a vote of the league's head coaches, SIDs and select media. The Jacks received 23 of 36 first-place votes and 636 points in the poll, while North Dakota State was picked second with 606 points and Oral Roberts third with 545 points.
- Three Jacks received preseason All-Summit League recognition in recognition in Baylor Scheierman (First Team), Douglas Wilson (First Team) and Noah Freidel (Second Team).
- The Jacks return all five starters and 10 letterwinners, including 99.3% of their minutes and 99.7% of their points, from a season ago.
- SDSU welcomes three newcomers to the roster this season, freshmen Zeke Mayo and Broden Lien, and junior JUCO product Jaylon Gentry.
- The Jacks are 1-1 in season-openers and 2-0 in home-openers under Henderson.
- SDSU was one of four teams in the nation to shoot above 40% from beyond the arc. The Jacks' 40.4 three-point percentage ranked second in the country last season, only behind Baylor.
- The Jackrabbits were one of the best shooting teams in the nation last season. SDSU ended the year with a 49.8 field goal percentage, the seventh-best mark nationally, and owned the 18th-best scoring offense in the nation in 2020-21 after averaging 80.4 points per game.
- Douglas Wilson was named to the 2021-22 Lou Henson National Player of the Year award preseason watch list Thursday, signifying the top mid-major player in Division I. Wilson was one of three players from the Summit League recognized on the list.
- Last year, Baylor Scheierman became one of seven players in the country since 1992-93 to average at least 15.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in a season. The do-it-all guard finished the year with 13 double-doubles, the 11th-most in the nation, and ranked third nationally and first in the league in defensive rebounds per game (8.65).
- Noah Freidel, the 2019-20 Summit League Freshman of the Year, averaged 16.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 14 games last season, shooting 41 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc. Freidel was second on the team in three-pointers (38) and fifth in scoring (224).
