LAS VEGAS — South Dakota State's
Clay Carlson and
Cade DeVos wrestled their way into the semifinals during the opening day of competition Friday at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Carlson, the top seeded wrestler at 141 pounds, posted two wins on the day. After receiving an opening-round bye, the junior from Willmar, Minnesota, recorded a second period fall over Louis Newell of Kent State during the opening session, then came back in the evening with a 6-3 decision over eighth-seeded Jake Bergeland of Minnesota. It was Carlson's third victory of the young season against Bergeland.
In Saturday's semifinals, Carlson will take on fifth-seeded Parker Filius of Purdue.
DeVos, seeded fifth at 174 pounds, compiled a 3-0 record on the day in improving to 8-0 on the season. The sophomore from Altoona, Iowa, began the day with a 4-3 decision over Shane Finney of Navy, then closed out the first session with a 7-3 decision against 12
th-seeded Tyler Eischens of Stanford. In the night session, DeVos upended fourth-seeded Hayden Hastings of Wyoming, 7-4, to set up a semifinal matchup Saturday against top-seeded Mikey Labriola of Nebraska.
Also remaining in contention for a top-eight placing is
A.J. Nevills at heavyweight. Nevills, seeded sixth, won each of his two matches in the opening session before dropping a 6-3 decision to No. 3 Christian Lance of Nebraska later in the day.
Nevills is scheduled to wrestle Jayden Woodruff of Utah Valley in consolation action Saturday morning.
Eight of the 10 Jackrabbits to see action in the tournament won at least one match Friday. Eighth-seeded
Tanner Jordan at 125 pounds, seventh-seeded
Tanner Cook at 165 pounds and No. 7 197-pounder
Tanner Sloan each won their opening-round matches. Jordan and Cook each lost their next two bouts, while Sloan withdrew from the tournament after dropping a 4-3 decision to 10
th-seeded Gavin Hoffman in the Round of 16.
Picking up wins in consolation matches were
Caleb Gross (133) and
Kenny O'Neil (157).
