Games 16 & 17 | South Dakota State (11-4, 5-1) at Oral Roberts (10-8, 7-3) |
South Dakota State
For the first time in over two months, the South Dakota State men's basketball team will play a true road game.
The Jackrabbits (11-4, 5-1 Summit League) look to keep pace with the top of the Summit League as they travel to take on Oral Roberts.
SDSU won its only two road games thus far, defeating Iowa State 71-68 in Ames (Dec. 2) and Bradley 88-84 in Peoria, Ill. (Dec. 4). The Jacks have played six netural site games in Sioux Falls at the Sanford Pentagon and seven more in their home facility of Frost Arena.
State's success is built on its offense. The Jacks are shooting 47.9 percent overall and 39.8 percent on 3-pointers, which is fourth in the nation.
  Â
Oral Roberts
The Golden Eagles are 10-8 overall and 7-3 in conference. Interestingly, they have won five of six road games in the league, but are 2-2 in four home games in Summit play.
Statistically, ORU is the best offensive team in the Summit League.
Oral Roberts is making 11.1 3-pointers per game, second most in Division I, and ranks seventh in the nation with a 79.7 percent success rate at the free-throw line.
Guard Max Abmas is making 3.53 treys a night while averaging 21.7 points. Forward Kevin Obanor has turned in seven double-doubles, posting season averages of 19.8 points and 10 rebounds per game.
On The Road ... Again?
The Jacks have only played two actual road games so far, both of those coming back in December.
SDSU was scheduled to play at Omaha (Jan. 15-16) and Denver (Jan. 29-30), but due to COVID-19 protocols, all four of those games were canceled.
Now it isn't as if the Jackrabbits haven't seen their fair share of hotel rooms - they did stay in Sioux Falls each night of the tournaments hosted at the Sanford Pentagon.
Assuming SDSU is able to play both games in Tulsa this weekend and the two-game series at North Dakota State, the Jacks would end the year with six actual away games.
The Series
SDSU holds a 16-9 advantage in the all-time series, with 24 of those 25 meetings coming as Division I members.
The Jacks have won seven straight and 13 of the last 14, with Oral Roberts lone win during that stretch coming on Jan. 17, 2017, a 94-88 victory in TulsaÂ
SDSU swept last season's two matchups. The Jacks claimed a 96-79 win in Brookings on Jan. 2, then downed the Golden Eagles 76-61 on Jan. 29 in Tulsa.
Double the Scheierman, Double the Fun
   Sophomore guard
Baylor Scheierman has become a double-double machine.
The Aurora, Neb., native has racked up nine double-doubles, seventh most in the country.
All nine of his double-doubles have come in the last 12 games, and he's corralled at least eight boards.
He may have had his best individual weekend of his career in the two-game series against South Dakota. In Friday's loss, Scheierman scored 15 points and grabbed a career-best 16 rebounds. He followed that up with a near triple-double - 19 points, a career-high nine assists and eight caroms - while handing USD its first league loss.
  Â
3-Point Shooting
The Jacks have been ringing the bell from long range this season.
SDSU had made 39.8 percent on its 3-point attempts. State's efficiency from beyond the arc is the fourth best in Division I.
Five times the Jackrabbits have made at least half of their 3-pointers in a game.
Additionally, SDSU had made 10 or more triples on five occasions.
3-Point Shooting, Part 2
This may come as a shock, but having two all-league players in the lineup tends to boost an offense's efficiency.
  Â
Douglas Wilson and
Noah Freidel have appeared together in eight of SDSU's 13 games. In those eight, the Jacks have made 97-of-218 3-pointers (44.5 percent). SDSU has made at least nine treys in five of those eight, including a 17-of-26 outburst at Bradley Dec. 4.
On the flip side, in games the Jacks were missing one or both of their standouts, SDSU has made 34-of-111 from long range, a 30.6 percent rate.
Defense = Wins
South Dakota shot 50 percent on Saturday in SDSU's 89-78 victory. It marked the first time all season a Jackrabbit opponent reached the 50 percent mark from the field.
Five times SDSU has held its opponent to below 40 percent shooting. In fact, there has only been three games this season a Jackrabbit opponent shot 48 percent.
By contrast, SDSU has shot over 48 percent in seven games and eclipsed the 50 percent mark on six separate occasions.
State's best offensive performance as far as shooting efficiency goes was on Jan. 22 when the Jacks made 31-of-51 attempts (60.8 percent) in a home win over North Dakota.
Arians at the Stripe
   Junior guard
Alex Arians has been incredibly efficient at the free throw line this a year.
The Madison, Wis., native had made 46-of-50 at the stripe. That's 92 percent, which ranks ninth nationally.
Arians has not missed in league play, making 16-of-16.
Going a step further, he's made 27 consecutive free throws. His last miss came late in the Dec. 10 win over North Dakota State.Â
He did not visit the line during the two-game series with South Dakota.
Freidel For Three
  Â
Noah Freidel remains one of the deadliest shooters in the Summit League.
A sophomore from Tea, he is averaging 16.4 points per game in league play, which ranks 10th in the conference, and the main reason is his long range accuracy.
Freidel has made 15-of-39 3-pointers in league play, a 38.5 percent success rate that ranks second in the conference.
For the season, Freidel is shooting 42.5 percent while averaging 2.92 makes per game.Â
An Appel A Day...
  Â
Luke Appel has been a model of efficiency in the low post for the Jackrabbit offense.
Appel was limited to only 21 minutes in the first five games. He has logged at least nine minutes in eight of the last ten, with the two exceptions due to foul trouble.
He's scored in double figures in four of those tilts, averaging 8.5 points over that span.
Most impressively is how efficient he has been - the scoring average comes in only 12 minutes, during which he is shooting 32-of-51 (62.7 percent).
  Â
Summit League Favorites
South Dakota State was the pick to win the Summit League in the conference preseason poll, garnering 33 of 36 first place votes. The Jackrabbits return the Summit's coach and player of the year and feature three preseason all-league honorees.
  Â
Douglas Wilson was voted as player of the year, while
Noah Freidel joined him on the first-team.
Matt Dentlinger was chosen as second-team all-league.
Power Five Wins
SDSU's victory at Iowa State Dec. 2 marked the fifth time in the past six seasons the Jacks have defeated a Power Five program. Dating back to 2008-09, SDSU has beaten a Power Five opponent eight times in 13 seasons.
Iowa State and Iowa have each fallen twice to the Jacks. In fact, SDSU is 4-0 against those two programs since moving to Division I.
SDSU also has wins over Ole Miss, TCU, Minnesota and Washington in that span.Â
That doesn't include a win at No. 16 New Mexico on Dec. 22, 2012 in Albuquerque.
Run of Success
South Dakota State has played in eight consecutive postseasons, a run that would likely have grown to nine if not for the COVID-19 pandemic causing all the tournaments to be canceled last March. That includes five NCAA Tournaments, a pair of National Invitation Tournaments and one trip to the College Basketball Invitational.
Only 16 programs in Division I have played in each of the last eight postseasons.
During this string of success, the Jacks have won five Summit League Tournaments and claimed at least a share of six regular season league titles.
The Jackrabbits have won 20 or more games each of the last three years and seven of the previous nine seasons.
Frost Arena Effect
No place in Division I men's basketball is harder for visiting teams to win in than Frost Arena. Don't believe us? Try this on for size...
Since 2015-16, South Dakota State is 74-4 in Frost Arena. That's a .961 winning percentage at home over the past five seasons. Over that span, only Gonzaga, New Mexico State and Kansas have won more than .920 percent of its home games,
If that isn't enough, let's go back to 2011-12. SDSU has played 132 games at Frost in the last nine-plus years, winning 125 of them. Six of those seasons, the Jacks didn't lose at home.Â
SDSU has four of the seven longest home court streaks in league history, including the conference record of 34 in a row from 2014 to 2017.
Additionally, the Jackrabbits were one of 13 teams to go undefeated at home in 2019-20.
Frost Effect Part 2: The Summit League
Since joining the Summit League in the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits are 93-20 in conference games played at Frost Arena.  Â
SDSU went 21-15 at home in its first four seasons in the Summit, but since then, the Jacks have been an impressive 72-5 against the league in Brookings. That's a span of nine seasons, including seven in which SDSU did not lost a game at home in league play.
