Games 18 & 19 | South Dakota State (12-5, 6-2) at North Dakota State (11-9, 9-3) |
South Dakota State
A pivotal Summit League showdown is set for Fargo, N.D., this weekend, as South Dakota State visits rival North Dakota State Friday and Saturday night.
After playing only two road games in the first two months of the season, South Dakota State will log four in an eight-day span. SDSU split two games at Oral Roberts last weekend.
The Jacks have established themselves as one of the top offensive teams in the country. SDSU ranks third nationally in 3-point percentage (40.1 percent) and 24th in scoring (80.7 points per game).
SDSU is scoring 84.8 points per game in conference play, shooting 48.8 percent overall and 42 percent from beyond the arc, all of which are tops in the Summit League.
   Â
North Dakota State
The Bison sport an 11-9 overall mark, but are tied atop the league standings at 9-3.
NDSU opened the season with three lopsided losses, but its last six defeats have all come by seven points or less.
Rocky Kreuser paces the Bison with averages of 14.8 points and 6.9 rebounds. Tyree Eady (11.1) and Sam Griesel (11.0) are also posting double-digit scoring efforts for NDSU.
   Â
On The Road ... Again?
SDSU only played two true road games during the nonconference, posting wins at Iowa State and Bradley in December.
The Jacks were scheduled to play at Omaha (Jan. 15-16) and Denver (Jan. 29-30), but due to COVID-19 protocols, all four of those games were canceled. So last weekend's games at Oral Roberts marked the first away games in over two months.
Now it isn't as if the Jackrabbits haven't seen their fair share of hotel rooms - they did stay in Sioux Falls each night of the tournaments hosted at the Sanford Pentagon.
The two games in Fargo this weekend will mark games five and six that are true road games for the Jacks this season.
Â
The Series
North Dakota State holds a 118-108 advantage in the series, which began on Jan. 19, 1910 in Brookings - and we all remember how that one turned out.
The Jacks have won nine of the last 12 in the rivalry, including the most recent, a 77-75 defeat of the Bison in the Dakota Showcase on Dec. 10 in Sioux Falls.
   Â
Noah Freidel's 17 points led the way for the Jacks.
Alex Arians contributed 16 points,
Baylor Scheierman tallied 14 points alongside 11 rebounds, and
Luke Appel also had 11.
NDSU's Sam Griesel posted a game-high 20 points, while Maleeck Harden-Hayes (18) and Rocky Kreuser (17) were also in double figures for the Bison.
Â
Double the Scheierman, Double the Fun
    Sophomore guard
Baylor Scheierman has become a double-double machine.
The Aurora, Neb., native has racked up 11 double-doubles, sixth most in the country.
All 11 of his double-doubles have come in the last 14 games, and in every game during that span he's corralled at least eight boards.
Scheierman currently ranks third in Division I with 9.06 defensive rebounds per game.
He's arguably played the best basketball of his career the past two weeks. In the last four games, he has averaged 17.8 points, 11.3 rebounds and 6.0 assists.
How rare is what Scheierman is doing? He is only the fifth sophomore in State history to turn in 10 or more double-doubles in a season. One freshman has also turned the trick.
Since SDSU moved to Division I in 2004, Scheierman is the sixth player with 10 or more career double-doubles.
    As a point of comparison,
Mike Daum had a total of 11 double-doubles in his first two seasons. He went on to set a school record with 54 in his career.

Scheierman in the Summit            Â
Scheierman has excelled in Summit League play, averaging 15.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists.
He is the only player in the country to average at least 15 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists in conference play.
In fact, Scheierman leads the Summit League in both rebounds and assists, which puts him in limited company. He is one of only five players in Division I who leads his conference in two of the three major statistical categories (points, rebounds and assists).

Additionally, he is one of 23 players nationally who is averaging a double-double in league play.
Â
3-Point Shooting
The Jacks have been ringing the bell from long range this season.
SDSU has made 40.1 percent of its 3-point attempts. State's efficiency from beyond the arc is the third best in Division I.
Five times the Jackrabbits have made at least half of their 3-pointers in a game.
Additionally, SDSU had made 10 or more triples on five occasions.
Â
Wilson Excels
   Â
Douglas Wilson isn't the reigning Summit League Player of the Year for nothing.
The Des Moines, Iowa, product has scored in double figures in all eight league games this year. Each weekend of conference play he has eclipsed the 20-point mark once.
In league-only action, Wilson is averaging 17.5 points per game, tops on the team and eighth in the conference.
He's shooting 52 percent against the league and hauling in 5.6 rebounds per game while playing an average of just 27.2 minutes.
Â
Defense = Wins
SDSU has held its opponent to below 40 percent shooting in six games this year.
Only twice - South Dakota (Feb. 6) and Oral Roberts (Feb. 13) - has a team made half of its shots against the Jacks.
By contrast, SDSU has shot over 48 percent in nine games and eclipsed the 50 percent mark on seven separate occasions.
State's best offensive performance as far as shooting efficiency goes was on Jan. 22 when the Jacks made 31-of-51 attempts (60.8 percent) in a home win over North Dakota.
Â
Arians at the Stripe
    Junior guard
Alex Arians has been incredibly efficient at the free throw line this a year.
The Madison, Wis., native had made 51-of-57 at the stripe. That's 89.8 percent, which ranks 13th nationally.
Arians had not missed in league play, making all 16, before he went 5-of-7 in Sunday's win at Oral Roberts.
His first miss in Tulsa ended a string of 28 consecutive makes, dating back to Dec. 10.
Â
An Appel A Day...
   Â
Luke Appel has been a model of efficiency in the low post for the Jackrabbit offense.
Appel was limited to only 21 minutes in the first five games. He has logged at least nine minutes in 10 of the last 12, scoring in double figures in five of those tilts.
In Summit League play, Appel is scoring 7.8 points in only 12.8 minutes per game.
He's made 24-of-39 attempts, shooting 61 percent in conference play.
Â
Easley Does It
    Sophomore transfer
Charlie Easley has risen to the occasion the last two weekends.
After playing a total of 17 minutes the previous three games, he's logged 21, 16, and 28 minutes in the three most recent affairs.
He proved himself worthy, scoring a total of 29 points - 9.7 per game - while hitting 6-of-9 from long range in the process.
The Nebraska transfer has six steals during that span and made his third start as a Jackrabbit in Sunday's win at Oral Roberts.
Â
Dentlinger Picking Up Steam
Matt Dentlinger was an honorable mention all-conference player.
He'd lacked consistency this year in the first 14 games - three times scoring double figures, twice going scoreless.
The last three times out, he's reverted to his old form.
Dentlinger tied his season high with 21 points against South Dakota (Feb. 6). In the two games at Oral Roberts last weekend, he scored 16 and 10.
Over the most recent three-game span, he's made 21-of-28 shots, averaging 15.7 points and 6.0 rebounds.
Â
Summit League Favorites
South Dakota State was the pick to win the Summit League in the conference preseason poll, garnering 33 of 36 first place votes. The Jackrabbits return the Summit's coach and player of the year and feature three preseason all-league honorees.
   Â
Douglas Wilson was voted as player of the year, while
Noah Freidel joined him on the first-team.
Matt Dentlinger was chosen as second-team all-league.
Â
Power Five Wins
SDSU's victory at Iowa State Dec. 2 marked the fifth time in the past six seasons the Jacks have defeated a Power Five program. Dating back to 2008-09, SDSU has beaten a Power Five opponent eight times in 13 seasons.
Iowa State and Iowa have each fallen twice to the Jacks. In fact, SDSU is 4-0 against those two programs since moving to Division I.
SDSU also has wins over Ole Miss, TCU, Minnesota and Washington in that span.
That doesn't include a win at No. 16 New Mexico on Dec. 22, 2012 in Albuquerque.
Â
Run of Success
South Dakota State has played in eight consecutive postseasons, a run that would likely have grown to nine if not for the COVID-19 pandemic causing all the tournaments to be canceled last March. That includes five NCAA Tournaments, a pair of National Invitation Tournaments and one trip to the College Basketball Invitational.
Only 16 programs in Division I have played in each of the last eight postseasons.
During this string of success, the Jacks have won five Summit League Tournaments and claimed at least a share of six regular season league titles.
The Jackrabbits have won 20 or more games each of the last three years and seven of the previous nine seasons.
Â
Frost Arena Effect
No place in Division I men's basketball is harder for visiting teams to win in than Frost Arena. Don't believe us? Try this on for size...
Since 2015-16, South Dakota State is 74-4 in Frost Arena. That's a .961 winning percentage at home over the past five seasons. Over that span, only Gonzaga, New Mexico State and Kansas have won more than .920 percent of its home games,
If that isn't enough, let's go back to 2011-12. SDSU has played 132 games at Frost in the last nine-plus years, winning 125 of them. Six of those seasons, the Jacks didn't lose at home.
SDSU has four of the seven longest home court streaks in league history, including the conference record of 34 in a row from 2014 to 2017.
Additionally, the Jackrabbits were one of 13 teams to go undefeated at home in 2019-20.
Â
Frost Effect Part 2: The Summit League
Since joining the Summit League in the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits are 93-20 in conference games played at Frost Arena.         Â
SDSU went 21-15 at home in its first four seasons in the Summit, but since then, the Jacks have been an impressive 72-5 against the league in Brookings. That's a span of nine seasons, including seven in which SDSU did not lost a game at home in league play.
