South Dakota is the lone undefeated men's basketball team in Summit League play, as the Coyotes handed South Dakota State a 64-56 loss Friday night at Frost Arena in Brookings.
The Jackrabbits (10-4, 4-1 Summit League) saw two long home court winning streaks come to an end - 32 straight overall and 29 consecutive in league – while the Coyotes won their 10th in a row.
Noah Freidel started things with a bang for SDSU, attacking the basket on the game's first possession, scoring a layup and drawing a foul. He converted the free throw to put State ahead 3-0.
It would be nearly eight minutes until the Jacks connected another field goal and they would not lead again.
Both defenses exerted their wills on the opposing offenses as the game was tied at 8-8 midway through the first. USD took control with a 19-6 run, building up a 27-14 lead with 3:03 left in the opening period.
The Jacks responded with nine straight points on two
Baylor Scheierman 3-pointers and one by Freidel. SDSU was within 29-23 at the half.
State cut the lead to four on four different occasions in the second stanza, and drew within three another time, but could not come any closer to its in-state rival.
Two of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, neither showed it on this night. SDSU was 7-of-28 (25 percent), while USD was 5-of-23 (22 percent).
Scheierman turned in his ninth double-double, scoring 15 points while hauling in a career-high 16 rebounds. Freidel poured in a team-best 18 points and
Douglas Wilson added 10 points and six boards.
A.J. Plitzuweit's game-high 19 points paced the Coyotes (11-6, 9-0) while Stanley Umude contributed 14 points and seven rebounds.
