Games 14 & 15 | South Dakota (10-6, 8-0) at South Dakota State (10-3, 4-0) |
South Dakota State
The two remaining unbeatens in Summit League play meet this weekend, as the in-state rivalry between South Dakota State (10-3, 4-0 Summit League) and South Dakota (10-6, 8-0) renews at Frost Arena in Brookings.
These games are part of the South Dakota Showdown Series presented by South Dakota Corn and MidcoSN.
The Jackrabbits have won five straight since a nonconference tilt with USD on Dec. 12, a 91-78 Coyote win in the Dakota Showcase in Sioux Falls.
State is shooting 41.9 percent from 3-point range, which ranks second in Division I, and its overall success rate of 49.5 percent is 22nd nationally.
SDSU is looking to extend a pair of impressive home court win streaks. The Jacks have won 32 consecutive Summit League games in Frost Arena and 29 in a row overall.

South Dakota
The Coyotes have overcome an 0-5 start to become the talk of the Summit League. Todd Lee's squad is a perfect 8-0 in conference play and has won 10 of its last 11.
Ironically, the turnaround started with a win over the Jackrabbits, USD's first of the year. That 91-78 defeat in which USD led from the outset sparked the Yotes, who lost to still undefeated Drake the following week and hasn't lost since.
The two-headed monster of Stanley Umude and A.J. Plitzuweit has caused nightmares for league opposition.
Umude, who went off for 41 points against the Jacks on Dec. 12, is averaging 20.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting 47 percent. He ravaged the Omaha defense to the tune of 56 points in the two-game sweep of the Mavericks.
Plitzuweit has been no slouch himself, pouring in 16.3 points per game. He exploded for a career high 37 points in USD's win over Omaha Saturday night in Vermillion
Â
Well Rested
The Jacks played only five games in the month of January. In fact, SDSU will have played five times in 54 days when Friday night's contest rolls around.
SDSU already had a lengthy layoff scheduled after the Dakota Showcase, Dec. 10-12.
Adding to that, the Jackrabbits' idle week in Summit League play was scheduled for the opening weekend in January, Then, SDSU's road series at Omaha and Denver were both canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
SDSU is one of 20 men's basketball programs in the country this year to have played four or fewer conference games through the month of January. That's out of the 347 Division I programs that have played this season.
The Series
The first SDSU-USD men's basketball game occurred on Mar. 4, 1914 in Vermillion. In the 107 years since the series began, SDSU owns a 131-96-1 advantage.
Since the two state schools rekindled their rivalry in Division I, the Jacks have won 15 of 22 meetings. That includes three Summit League Tournament contests, all SDSU victories.
USD dominated the most recent matchup, a 91-78 Coyote victory on Dec. 12 as part of the Dakota Showcase inside the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

Double the Scheierman, Double the Fun
    Sophomore guard
Baylor Scheierman has become a double-double machine.
The Aurora, Neb., native has racked up eight double-doubles, seventh most in the country.
All eight of his double-doubles have come in the last 10 games. The two times he didn't reach the 10-rebound mark in that span, he gathered in eight and nine boards, respectively.
For the season, Scheierman is averaging 13.8 points and 9.2 rebounds.
He has scored double figures on 12 occasions, highlighted by a career-best 23 points vs. Utah State Nov. 26 in the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls. His rebound high, 14, came against Mount Marty on Jan. 4.
Â
3-Point Shooting
The Jacks have been ringing the bell from long range this season.
SDSU had made 41.9 percent on its 3-point attempts. That success rate is the second best in Division I.
Five times the Jackrabbits have made at least half of their 3-pointers in a game.
Additionally, SDSU had made 10 or more triples on four occasions.
Â
3-Point Shooting, Part 2
This may come as a shock, but having two all-league players in the lineup tends to boost an offense's efficiency.
   Â
Douglas Wilson and
Noah Freidel have appeared together in eight of SDSU's 13 games. In those eight, the Jacks have made 83-of-168 3-pointers (49.4 percent). SDSU has made at least nine treys in five of those eight, including a 17-of-26 outburst at Bradley Dec. 4.
On the flip side, in games the Jacks were missing one or both of their standouts, SDSU has made 34-of-111 from long range, a 30.6 percent rate.
Â
Wilson Shines
   Â
Douglas Wilson is the reigning Summit League Player of the Year, and he certainly hasn't disappointed during his senior campaign.
The Des Moines, Iowa, native returned to the lineup Jan. 8 after missing four games..
He's averaged 17.7 points in those games - all Summit League games - and has converted on 26-of-45 shots (57.8 percent).
Wilson is third in league-only games in shooting percentage and eighth in scoring.
Â
Arians at the Stripe
    Junior guard
Alex Arians has been incredibly efficient at the free throw line this a year.
The Madison, Wis., native had made 46-of-50 at the stripe. That's 92 percent, which ranks ninth nationally.
Arians has not missed in league play, making 16-of-16.
Going a step further, he's made 27 consecutive free throws. His last miss came late in the Dec. 10 win over North Dakota State.
Â
Freidel For Three
   Â
Noah Freidel remains one of the deadliest shooters in the Summit League.
A sophomore from Tea, he is averaging 18 points per game in league play, which ranks fifth in the conference, and the main reason is his long range accuracy.
Freidel has made 12-of-20 3-pointers in league play, a 60 percent success rate that puts him atop the league.
For the season, Freidel is shooting 46.7 percent while averaging 3.18 makes per game. He's ninth in the nation in percentage and 14th in 3-point field goals per game.
Â
An Appel A Day...
   Â
Luke Appel has been a model of efficiency in the low post for the Jackrabbit offense.
Appel was limited to only 21 minutes in the first five games. He has logged at least 11 minutes in six of the last eight, with the two exceptions due to foul trouble.
He's scored in double figures in four of those tilts, averaging 10.5 points over that span.
Most impressively is how efficient he has been - the 10.5 scoring average comes in only 13.6 minutes, during which he is shooting 32-of-48 (66.7 percent).
   Â
Summit League Favorites
South Dakota State was the pick to win the Summit League in the conference preseason poll, garnering 33 of 36 first place votes. The Jackrabbits return the Summit's coach and player of the year and feature three preseason all-league honorees.
   Â
Douglas Wilson was voted as player of the year, while
Noah Freidel joined him on the first-team.
Matt Dentlinger was chosen as second-team all-league.
Â
Power Five Wins
SDSU's victory at Iowa State Dec. 2 marked the fifth time in the past six seasons the Jacks have defeated a Power Five program. Dating back to 2008-09, SDSU has beaten a Power Five opponent eight times in 13 seasons.
Iowa State and Iowa have each fallen twice to the Jacks. In fact, SDSU is 4-0 against those two programs since moving to Division I.
SDSU also has wins over Ole Miss, TCU, Minnesota and Washington in that span.
That doesn't include a win at No. 16 New Mexico on Dec. 22, 2012 in Albuquerque.
Â
Run of Success
South Dakota State has played in eight consecutive postseasons, a run that would likely have grown to nine if not for the COVID-19 pandemic causing all the tournaments to be canceled last March. That includes five NCAA Tournaments, a pair of National Invitation Tournaments and one trip to the College Basketball Invitational.
Only 16 programs in Division I have played in each of the last eight postseasons.
During this string of success, the Jacks have won five Summit League Tournaments and claimed at least a share of six regular season league titles.
The Jackrabbits have won 20 or more games each of the last three years and seven of the previous nine seasons.
Â
Frost Arena Effect
No place in Division I men's basketball is harder for visiting teams to win in than Frost Arena. Don't believe us? Try this on for size...
Since 2015-16, South Dakota State is 73-3 in Frost Arena. That's a .961 winning percentage at home over the past five seasons. Over that span, only Gonzaga, New Mexico State and Kansas have won more than .920 percent of its home games,
If that isn't enough, let's go back to 2011-12. SDSU has played 130 games at Frost in the last nine-plus years, winning 124 of them. Six of those seasons, the Jacks didn't lose at home.
The Jackrabbits have won 29 consecutive games at home, the third-longest active streak in Division I men's hoops. It's also the fourth longest streak ever by a Summit League program.
SDSU has four of the seven longest streaks in league history, including the conference record of 34 in a row from 2014 to 2017.
Additionally, the Jackrabbits were one of 13 teams to go undefeated at home in 2019-20.
   Â
Frost Effect Part 2: The Summit League
Since joining the Summit League in the 2007-08 season, the Jackrabbits are 92-19 in conference games played at Frost Arena.         Â
SDSU went 21-15 at home in its first four seasons in the Summit, but since then, the Jacks have been an impressive 71-4 against the league in Brookings. That's a span of nine seasons, including seven in which SDSU did not lost a game at home in league play.
The Jacks have won 32 consecutive Summit League games in Frost Arena, a string dating back to a 101-93 loss to Omaha on Jan. 7, 2017. That's the second longest streak in league history. Oral Roberts won 35 consecutive conference home games between 2005 and 2009.
